New Monitor and settings

I just bought a new output monitor, Its kind of a cheap one but I dont have much money. Its a Insignia 19" 720p I bought it because im doing everything on 16X9 now and I want to see what im getting. One thing I noticed is how bad DV looks 2nd thing is what settings do I do to make sure I fill the screen on the output. Also what setting are my clients most likley to have in their t.v.s?

If you're feeding the monitor anything except for its native resolution, it will use its scaler to upscale the video to the native resolution and it will likely look poor as the majority of TVs have mediocre scalers.

Who knows what your clients will have set on their TVs. Most will have it set to Wide and will watch 4x3 stretched out. Either people don't notice, don't care, or don't know any better.

This may be a dumb question but can I assume this problem of quality and scalling will be solved when I start shooting and delivering in 720p?

Also is there a way I can "pre-scale" it for t.v. like with ProCoder or is it just one of those things i'll have to live with until HD takes off?

You'll need to edit in the native resolution of the display.

Since you can't really tell whether the display is 720-native, 1080-native or in-between, it's up to you whether you deliver 720p, 1080i or 1080p.

If you're delivering SD, it's going to be upscaled on any HD display.
