  • Possible new system - comments?

I'm looking to upgrade my current P4 3.0 HT computer with something multicore. A local supplier is currently running a special on the following system. The price is better than I can do building my own this time around.

Here are the system basics. Any comment from users of this MB and processor would be appreciated. I will be using it primarily for Vegas and GV Edius.

I admit very little knowledge of the current multicore architecture. Hyperthreaded Pentiums were the last place I had time to roll my own and learn a lot.

Looking forward, I might want to add the new HDStorm card or NX to this and keep my current P4 Storm2 system intact.

I will be adding my own video RAID array.

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz Mid-Tower

    Antec NSK4480 Black Mid-Tower Case w/ 380W Power Supply
Intel DG33FB ATX Sound, VGA, Gigabit Ethernet
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz, 8MB Cache
    Apacer 2GB DDR 2 800Mhz
Sony (Black) 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive
    Seagate 500GB SATA II 300Mbps ST3500320AS 7200RPM
    Sony 16X Black DVD+/-RW
    Sony 1648 Black DVD-ROM
EVGA 8800GT 512MB PCI Express VGA Card
Microsoft Windows Vista Business -32-Bit (DVD) (Downgrade to XP if needed)
    Microsoft Wireless Dektop (Keyboard/Optical Mouse)

    Thanks everyone!

Seems a reasonable spec to me. I run an Intel Quad core and happy with it. Not tried but your are supposed to be able to overclock them easily.

I suggest that you should go with full tower P180 or P182 (very quite case) - to add more hard disks later, and at least 550W (750w is better) power supply. (some graphic cards require high power).
      Asus P5WDH Deluxe w/E6600 - 4GB Corsair - 8800GTS - 1TB & 1.5TB (2x750GB RAID 0) - Antec P180 + Trio 650W - XP Pro w/sp3 - NX PCIe w/Expansion Card - Edius 5.51
      Asus P6T i7 920 @3.6 - 12GB Corsair Dominator - GTX275 - 1.5TB & 3TB (2x1.5TB RAID 0) for Video - Antec P183 + Corsair HX-750W - Win7 - Edius 6.07 - Firecoder Blu - PC3.05.91 - BDR-203 - TMW5 & TAW5
      Asus P6T i7 930 - 12GB Corsair - GTX260 - 1TB & 1TB WD Black for Video - Antec P183 + TPQ-850W - Win7 - Edius 6.07 w/HD Spark - BDR-205

Yep, ADD power, the 380 watts is way way to skinny !

Nowadays good power is afordable, I use 1kw, not that I use it now, but you never know ......

P.s. I like to over design as long as my wallet allows it :)
