Use the Numpad to go through the timeline via timecode
* Enter 115 for example and press enter, it will jump to 1:15sec.
* Use + or - to move forward or backward. Enter the + or - and then enter 30 for example for 30 frames, etc.
* Make sure NUM LOCK is on.
Nudge In/Outs & use the new Trim options to nudge clips
* Use , or . (comma & period) keys to nudge in & out points by selecting the cut points.
* Enter the Trim mode (F6) and choose "Select Roll" (last trim option) after selecting your clip and use the , and . keys to move your clip frame by frame on the timeline.
* Hold down shift to move in 10 frame increments for both of the above options.
Move through edit points
* Hold down CTRL+ Left or Right keys to move through edit points.
* Same can be done with A and S keys. A is backwards, S is forward.
Shuttle with the JKL keys
*Hold down CTRL+ J or L keys (multiple presses affect speed) and you will have a shuttle effect.
Select in and out of a clip automatically
* Click on any clip and press Z on your keyboard, the in and out are marked on the timeline for that clip.
* Do the above and double click on top of the timeline marker. Same effect.
Make a new Layout for Multicam mode
*This is great for Dual Monitor users. Turn off the player window, and resize the recorder window to full screen and put it on your left monitor. Put the timeline on your right monitor. You now have a full screen view...Easier to deal with than outputting to a broadcast monitor, because the multicam mode does not follow the action safe rules...or use Underscan mode on your monitor (if it has it).
* Save this layout so you can go back to it whenever you want to.
Use the preroll function to preview cuts
*Not really a trick, but I'm sure not everyone uses this wonderful feature. I made a shortcut to the "Play Area" or "pre-roll" (real term) and mapped it to the "\" button (like FCP) and set the duration to 3 seconds. Scrub to your location and press the pre-roll key and watch your cut. It will stop after the 3 seconds are up (or any other duration you set to)
Select tracks via keyboard
*Use the UP and DOWN keys to select your track focus.
Select transitions individually
* You need to be zoomed in properly
* Hold down ALT and click on your audio or video transition, it will select them separetly.
Save some timeline space
*Either turn off the Title Track and save it as the default preset or just delete it to save some space, if you never use it.
Save your presets in the EFFECT bin
*Drag your effect(s) (or transition) from the INFORMATION window and drag it to any folder in the effects window. You will have a preset.
* Create new folders so you can categorize your favorite filters & transitions
* Easily rename folders/transitions/effect sets by pressing F2 (Windows standard shortcut for renaming files and folders).
Markers
* Use V to create markers...
* Use V again by snapping to that marker to delete that marker.
Renaming sequences
*If you rename a sequence by renaming it in the bin, the sequence in the tabs are not affected. Easier way is to just RIGHT CLICK and choose SEQUENCE SETTINGS from the tab itself, and enter a new name for that sequence. It affects both the bin name and tab name.
In..out
To create an In and out point by double clicking on the ruler above the clip make sure the track that the clip is on selected.
You can also double click over a empty space on the timeline and an In and Out point will created covering the empty space.
You can delete the in and out points in either window by selecting the X Key on the keyboard.
ALT+ I or O clears the in and out points....Or use I and O to do an in and out point, in the timeline or the player window.
Convert Alpha files to Canopus Lossless or Canopus HQ w/ alpha to save space right in Edius 4
1) Select your file in the bin, for example a 32bit Digital Juice overlay in the Uncompressed AVI or QuickTime Uncompressed format.
2) Right click on the file and go to Convert > File. Pick Canopus Lossless or Canopus HQ Online and when complete you will have a brand new file with an Alpha channel. Easier on your computer (smaller sizes) and the quality is great on the HQ or Lossless (preffered) files. Your file is automatically added to your bin.
Hold down SHIFT while scrubbing to bypass SNAPPING temporarily. Let go and it goes back to snapping.
When on a track, press Alt+S to reveal the waveform (in video tracks and audio tracks) and do it again to hide it (desired track needs to be selected). Alt+W reveals the "mixer".
If you ever "lose" the bin, click on any empty space on the timeline, and press "B" on your keyboard and the bin will come back.
You can actually view sequences as if they were good old video files. Just drag any sequence from the bin onto the player window, and you are now able to look through the sequence as if it was just a regular avi file.
Save Custom Filters & Transitions.
Create a new folder named "Custom" in the Effects tab, or name it anything else you want. Drag and drop any filters (even combinations) from the info palette onto the Effects window and name your filters! Same cam be done for transitions. Just select your transition, and drag it from the information palette onto the Custom folder and name your transition. You can also have folders under your Custom folder. Finally, you can export the whole tree into a single file and save it for the future or to pass it around your fellow editors.
Select a clip and ALT+X will ripple delete that clip on the timeline.
