  • Edius 4.X Tips...

Use the Numpad to go through the timeline via timecode

    * Enter 115 for example and press enter, it will jump to 1:15sec.
    * Use + or - to move forward or backward. Enter the + or - and then enter 30 for example for 30 frames, etc.
    * Make sure NUM LOCK is on.

Nudge In/Outs & use the new Trim options to nudge clips

    * Use , or . (comma & period) keys to nudge in & out points by selecting the cut points.
    * Enter the Trim mode (F6) and choose "Select Roll" (last trim option) after selecting your clip and use the , and . keys to move your clip frame by frame on the timeline.
    * Hold down shift to move in 10 frame increments for both of the above options.

    Move through edit points
    * Hold down CTRL+ Left or Right keys to move through edit points.
    * Same can be done with A and S keys. A is backwards, S is forward.

    Shuttle with the JKL keys

*Hold down CTRL+ J or L keys (multiple presses affect speed) and you will have a shuttle effect.

Select in and out of a clip automatically

    * Click on any clip and press Z on your keyboard, the in and out are marked on the timeline for that clip.
    * Do the above and double click on top of the timeline marker. Same effect.

Make a new Layout for Multicam mode

*This is great for Dual Monitor users. Turn off the player window, and resize the recorder window to full screen and put it on your left monitor. Put the timeline on your right monitor. You now have a full screen view...Easier to deal with than outputting to a broadcast monitor, because the multicam mode does not follow the action safe rules...or use Underscan mode on your monitor (if it has it).
    * Save this layout so you can go back to it whenever you want to.

Use the preroll function to preview cuts

*Not really a trick, but I'm sure not everyone uses this wonderful feature. I made a shortcut to the "Play Area" or "pre-roll" (real term) and mapped it to the "\" button (like FCP) and set the duration to 3 seconds. Scrub to your location and press the pre-roll key and watch your cut. It will stop after the 3 seconds are up (or any other duration you set to)

    Select tracks via keyboard

*Use the UP and DOWN keys to select your track focus.

    Select transitions individually
    * You need to be zoomed in properly
    * Hold down ALT and click on your audio or video transition, it will select them separetly.

    Save some timeline space

*Either turn off the Title Track and save it as the default preset or just delete it to save some space, if you never use it.

Save your presets in the EFFECT bin

*Drag your effect(s) (or transition) from the INFORMATION window and drag it to any folder in the effects window. You will have a preset.
    * Create new folders so you can categorize your favorite filters & transitions
    * Easily rename folders/transitions/effect sets by pressing F2 (Windows standard shortcut for renaming files and folders).

    Markers

    * Use V to create markers...
    * Use V again by snapping to that marker to delete that marker.

    Renaming sequences

*If you rename a sequence by renaming it in the bin, the sequence in the tabs are not affected. Easier way is to just RIGHT CLICK and choose SEQUENCE SETTINGS from the tab itself, and enter a new name for that sequence. It affects both the bin name and tab name.

    In..out
To create an In and out point by double clicking on the ruler above the clip make sure the track that the clip is on selected.

You can also double click over a empty space on the timeline and an In and Out point will created covering the empty space.

You can delete the in and out points in either window by selecting the X Key on the keyboard.

ALT+ I or O clears the in and out points....Or use I and O to do an in and out point, in the timeline or the player window.

Convert Alpha files to Canopus Lossless or Canopus HQ w/ alpha to save space right in Edius 4

    1) Select your file in the bin, for example a 32bit Digital Juice overlay in the Uncompressed AVI or QuickTime Uncompressed format.
    2) Right click on the file and go to Convert > File. Pick Canopus Lossless or Canopus HQ Online and when complete you will have a brand new file with an Alpha channel. Easier on your computer (smaller sizes) and the quality is great on the HQ or Lossless (preffered) files. Your file is automatically added to your bin.

Hold down SHIFT while scrubbing to bypass SNAPPING temporarily. Let go and it goes back to snapping.

When on a track, press Alt+S to reveal the waveform (in video tracks and audio tracks) and do it again to hide it (desired track needs to be selected). Alt+W reveals the "mixer".

If you ever "lose" the bin, click on any empty space on the timeline, and press "B" on your keyboard and the bin will come back.

You can actually view sequences as if they were good old video files. Just drag any sequence from the bin onto the player window, and you are now able to look through the sequence as if it was just a regular avi file.

    Save Custom Filters & Transitions.
Create a new folder named "Custom" in the Effects tab, or name it anything else you want. Drag and drop any filters (even combinations) from the info palette onto the Effects window and name your filters! Same cam be done for transitions. Just select your transition, and drag it from the information palette onto the Custom folder and name your transition. You can also have folders under your Custom folder. Finally, you can export the whole tree into a single file and save it for the future or to pass it around your fellow editors.

Select a clip and ALT+X will ripple delete that clip on the timeline.

Thanks to StormDave for giving permission to add his tips along with mine! :)

Plugin to Output Timeline markers to a text file for use in DVD Programs.

Plugin to Output Timeline markers to a text file for use in DVD Programs.

The Timeline-Marker-Exporter-Plugin exports the marker positions of the EDIUS-Timeline into a simple textfile. You can choose the format to export, either the Framenumber or standard SMPTE format ("hh:mm:ss;ff"). The exported list can be used with other programms like DVD-Authoring-Tools for example as Chapterpoints or similar.

Elementary Streams Using Edius Export Plug-In

Elementary streams are easily available, but perhaps not as obvious...

Highlight your Timeline area to export.
        Open the Export Plug-In (F11)
Pick MPEG in the left pane.
        Pick Enable Conversion.
Pick Change Video Format. Chose your video conversion properties.
Pick Change Audio Format. Untick Export Audio.
        Pick Add To Batch List.
Finalize your conversion settings and add a filename and location.
Pick Save. You are automatically returned to Edius and ready to export the Audio.

The Timeline is already highlighted to export.
        Open the Export Plug-In (F11)
Pick Audio in the left pane.
        Enable Conversion is optional.
        Chose your target audio format.
        Pick Change Audio Format.
        Pick Add To Batch List.
Finalize your conversion settings and add a filename and location.
        Pick Save

Pick File > Print > Batch Export.
        Pick Export.
        Make coffee.

These can be saved as presets for future use.

If the exporter crashes, Edius will not resume where it left off, but will recover, remembering your batch list and overwrite unfinished exports.

          My Favorite E5 "Glow"

Quick and easy, but requires some basic steps.

          Trim your clip to length.
Copy the clip to a higher V track. (ctrl+drag or copy/paste)
To the lower clip, apply the NewBlue effect called "Dream Glow" and pick the preset "Strong Glow" (Save as a User Preset)
To the upper clip, apply the "Soft Light" Keyer (Keyers>Blend>Soft Light)
          Render and be amazed!
Blacks are crushed and highlights are brilliant while maintaining detail and not going cartoony.

I'm open to improvements, so post away!

            1. To rename a sequence, you can also double RIGHT click the sequence tab and rename.

            2. GET RID OF RANDOM GAPS ON TIMELINE
To get rid of gaps between clips, select all the clips on track (CTRL-A) or just the clips you want to remove the "in between" gaps from, and press the BACKSPACE button. (p.s. You can choose all clips BUT the first one if you want to delete all gaps but have them all snap to the first clip without moving the first clip)

            3. Quickly change the project default duration without going into the project settings by right clicking anywhere in your effects bin and choosing duration. You can click on the number and change the number by scrolling the mouse wheel. (p.s. if you need audio and video to be the same duration, you need to change each separately - the same way mentioned above)

              Best reason to avoid .mp3

Typically, I'll try music to see how things sound before committing to an edit, and if audio cues are unimportant, .mp3 is fine. After settling on a song, I use Audacity to convert to .wav. By chance I put both tracks on the Timeline today and was surprised at the differences, and similarities.

Notice how similar the waveforms are (particularly at the end) but how far off the tracks are! The lower track (.wav) appears to have a longer silence at the end, but the .mp3 is not in sync with it's own waveform!

                  hi all
I need help. I cannot export from the timeline to my tape. when clicked print to tape option, it showed " no VCR connected". while I can capture the videos with the same settings with the same DV iLink wire. I checked with my hardware setting/ OHCI output setting /selected output format as DV output.
One more thing ,the same video can be "print to tape" from Premiere pro 1.5.
I used to have output before. But , once I had to format my system and did install all again. Since then I am having this problem.Mine is Edius 4.02. I did try many times by unstalling the edius and installing again. But in vain.
My other problem is "TV output and rendering" in edius 5 in another system. It has DV Storm XA Plus card. I have come to know that grassvalley doesnt provide TV out driver plug ins for Dv storm XA Plus. Is that true?If so, then what's use of upgrading newer version of EDIUS software. Are they going to do some good solutions for this kind of problem?
And there's a rendering problem in my Edius 5. It shows some error code 0x870307d0 after few seconds( about 3 -5 seconds of rendering).
Does anyone has the solution to my problems? Please ! help me.
                  Thanks.
