  • Edius5- it it really 5?

Nice stuff, nice timing, but... same interface, no 3D PIP (was tested long time ago and should be a bomb), no AJA and Decklink support, no Alpha... all those things were promiced and missed in this version. Maybe this is not ver5?
Maybe it is half-cooked kinda of ver.4.9 or so?
Again, I like what I see, my point that I do not see lots of things. Is this exactly what you are going to sell? Or when the full one will be available for customers as well as normal trial version?
    Thank you.

You don't like it? Miss features? Then you better move on because life's too short to make mischief...at least in my world.

It's version 5, and the trial is a reflection of the feature set (minus the third party software).

I do not recall anyone promising anything in this release outside of Windows Vista support.

Whatever is missing its a step in the right direction on a few fronts! Increased alpha support (sort of) and the ability to ingest and edit ALL formats - only the broadcast upgrade allowed in the past!

For NEW users the third party add-ons is an incredible package, and the ability of the software to run happily in vista 64 is a great help, needing only 1 machine with your true 64 bit apps and edius on at the same time

NO good picking on the points missed just keep asking!!!

This version in my opinion looks after the new user far more than exsisting - SO GV the upgrade price needs to be VERY KEEN!!!!

BUT never the less its steps in right direction!!! for all potential and current users;-)

Don't know why Decklink and AJA should be expected to work with it. They compete with the NX and HDStorm hardware. I never remember hearing promises of those. In fact anytime that stuff is brought up around here in the forums it is quickly dismissed as competing hardware. Just like the Black Magic Intensity. Why should they support it? The GV hardware plays better with Edius than those apps ever could and in some cases is much more cost effective.

In another thread the non-support of Alpha was mentioned. There is a reason it isn't in this release and it made a world of sense when explained in the other thread.

Edius 5 is a great update for the user base even though all issues aren't addressed. Like someone said you can't please everyone all the time. I am thrilled with the updated features and plugin's and I think GV may finally start making a dent in the NLE popularity.

I don't see why there is a need to support AJA and Decklink when you can have the HDSTORM and the Plus package.

I thinks its GREAT!!. Two of my feature requests (XDCAM essence marker recognition) and undo/redo behaviour seem to be in there.

              Fantastic set of effects/plugins.

              Well done!

                1. Of course the GV hardware plays well with Edius....it is designed to.
                2. As far as the Intensity:I already have the Intensity Pro, and with the optional breakout cable, I can get
                2x XLR Balanced Audio Input
                2x XLR Balanced Audio Output
                1x BNC SPDIF/AES Input
                1x BNC SPDIF/AES Output
                3x BNC Component Input
                3x BNC Component Output
                1x BNC Ref Input
                1x RS-422 for Deck Control

All of that on top of HDMI. The card and the cable is less than $500...compared to $1299 (how is that more cost effective if you already own Edius) and is already 64bit ready. I have used it for about a year now.
Captures in uncompressed 8bit and MJPEG(PC). Both work well in Edius. Edius 5 is supposed to have better MJPEG handling capabilites as well. That I cannot confirm. With my NX, and Intensity Pro I have everything except HD/SD SDI.

The reason people want the 3rd party hardware support is for features that are not available at a reasonable price on GV products currently on the market.
I use this card for capture only. I can, but choose not to, use Premiere.
I do however use the card for Photoshop and AE work.
Look at the BM Decklink HD Extreme. It has everything in one card for under
$1000. It works with Vegas, Premiere, and FCP. It provides the same function as the NX or SP, it supplies an RT output to monitor. No acceleration provided just like the GV cards. Is there any wonder why someone would not like to be able to use that card with Edius. Obviously, It is not a deal breaker for most of us .

Sadly, that will never happen. I guess we can blame that on Hiro. Let me be clear on this, at least since I have been around (a very long time), 3rd party hardware was never given consideration for use. That has always been a no no.

                3. The explanation of the lack of alpha support leaves a lot to be desired. It was merely a marketing decision from GV. A new release will bring in revenue and possibly new customers. Waiting till next year may or may not. Pesonally, 4.6 works great and I could have waited until next year for the release. But the program would have looked as if it had stagnated. With CS4 being released soon, and in full 64bit, a new release was definitely needed.

                4. I hope you are right about GV making a dent in the editing world.
But for a mainstream editor at V5 without full alpha support, it will probably be shown as a weakness in reviews.

                5. You are right about the plugins. That is a great package. For the upgrade price it is less than Vitascene alone.

Don't get me wrong. I will be getting the upgrade. Just as I have bought products and upgrades since 1997, I will be getting this one as well.
Edius is a really good editor but, I want it to become a great editor.
If you do not have the hardware, the HDSTORM is a perfect choice for Edius users. But, I will stick with my NX for playback and myt Intensity Pro hardware for capture, at least until I get an HDSDI card.

By all means, don't take out your frustrations on the moderators of the forum. It is not their fault that features were left out. They work for a corporation. They also have to deal with Japan for feature sets. That, if you don't already know, is a whole different story.

i would have prefrred 10 bit support and capture having not to use premiere and bd extreme but doing everything with edius

I see more to like in version 5 than any previous upgrade, and easily (!) worth the price. If something's still missing, have a beer and fuhgeddaboutit. :-)

It's there. I believe Mike was hoping that the layout tool's new keyframes would include Z-axis manipulation, which it does not.

The classic 3D PiP lives on.

I thought as much that the layout tool was where 3dPIP went so it seem that GV will have to do few updates ,I will wait and see till V5 has been used and see what problem crop up,this I did with V4 and i am glad i did , so for me it is the waiting game.

Fair enough, but keep in mind that an update as vast as the free 4.5 update was, won't be happening again for v5. We want to focus on bug fixing and format tweaking, in between major releases.
