  • cheapest solution downrezz from 1080i into Edius

What is the cheapest solution for in-camera downrezzzing HDV footage to SD directly into Edius by firewire? I shoot on FX1 and edit in DV and don't want to beat up the camera so badly capturing footage for my upcoming HDV-SD projects. Is the low-cost solution to buy a low-end Sony (or other) HDV camcorder for playback rather than a full blown HDV deck?
If so, what's the cheapest model?
Any real world gotcha's with going this route?

i would capture all material to canopus hq hdv and then open the files in a edius dv project. Takes more computer power and Hdd space but you are able to switch your project to hdv whenever you need. If you have a good computer you can do the entire project in hdv and then just export it to dv or mpeg or whatever you need...

But I still am looking for the cheapest way to playback the HDV tapes. Thanks,

Yes, the cheapest solutiohn would be a less expensive camera. I really don't know anyone that has a deck. I know for the Canon solution the new HV20 is a fantastic $1,000 camera. We are getting one for our "deck"

agreed... A deck is very confining and a lower cost camera, which is usually less expensive than a deck, works well not only as a deck but also as a back up camera if you are ever in a pinch. :)

Hey Pat...I got one of those suckers for $978 online from Circuit City to use as a deck and for the tight/wide shot in a hunting 2 cam scenario....the trackers in africa are gonna love it. It really does just fine in good light and for the price makes a nice deck. Cheap cams are the way to go IMHO

Can the Canon HV20 lovers confirm that it will properly downrezz Sony-shot 1080i from the camera via firewire to 16x9 SD??

I ended up buying a Sony HDR-HC7 from Amazon (refurb) and am very happy with it...downrezzes like a charm, and the image (single CMOS imager) is surprisingly robust...maybe it'll have some 2nd camera functionality as well as use as a playback device.
