Just a question IF Canopus were to release a Storm like product with a HDMI out ( I said Storm to keep it in the Edius forum) and I was going cheap (which I am) could I use a PC monitor with a DVI input to use as my editing monitor witha DVI to HDMI adapter? would it look bad?

I have used another product that has a HDMI output and it doesn't like a HDMI to DVI converter, second thing is the HDMI is usually carrying sound which wouldn't be xfered through a HDMI to DVI converter so a separate sound source may be necessary(may add sync problems)

Going from HDMI to DVI tends to work more often, unless the source is looking for HDCP.

DVI can support HDCP, it's just that most of the early-generation HDCP "compliant" devices used DVI and many of them are only partially compliant with today's HDCP. Later HDCP compliant devices switched to HDMI.

DVI & HDMI are very similar, except HDMI can carry audio and other data.

Right now I have a 40" Sony XBR4 that's connected to the NX via Component. Quality is superb for previewing purposes. I also have an Intensity Pro for After Effects work (Under OSX) and I use HDMI to the big screen as well as component to my Sony broadcast monitor. Not much difference between HDMI & Component that will hurt your monitoring.

DigitalDave, that's an interesting comparison considering HDMI is digital output and the other analogue.
Which do you like the best and why?

Hi John, I think you're mistaking me with Digital Dave from the UK hehe

Anyways, as far as digital vs analog, obviously I prefer digital, but checking footage between the HDMI out of the Intensity & Component out of the NX from the same footage, there wasn't that big of a difference. Now, HDMI was a bit cleaner, but that shouldn't stop you from using the component out of the NX for real work.

I would prefer SDI or HDMI over analog component, but since there is no HDMI capable (not Pegasus) editing card from Grass Valley, we can't do much. I'm sure GV is looking into it, HDMI is the cheapest solution available from previewing for people like us who don't want to invest $13,000 for an HD-SDI monitor.

Now I have to calibrate the XBR4 so I can push the LCD to it's limits for proper color reproduction.

Sorry Dave, must have had DIGITAL on the brain.
There are probably more studios around the world working with analogue than digital monitors, some claim it's nicer to look at.
When it all boils down the majority of people world wide still watch 240 line analogue television. I travel a lot and it makes me wonder what all the fuss is with digital transmission particularly when seasoned filmmakers always try to soften the picture (film like).
