  • Somethings work...some don't

I am editing an HDV clip. I have two video tracks. The top track is a headshot that I applied a chromakey filter. Then I tried to apply a 3D PIP filter which would not apply to the clip. Then I tried a color correction filter which does work. At the end of the chromakeyed clip I tried to put a dissolve to fade into the background clip...it doesn't work. Are there any reasons why some filters work some don't?

Edius will only allow one effect per keyer track. Any other effect applied after the first will not work. You can work around this by using sequences. Open a second sequence and apply your cromakey and then bring that sequence into the main project and apply the 3DPIP. You can also use the rubberband for your disolve or fade.

Thanks I tried this. I opened a new sequence and put my keyed video on that. Then I went back to the original sequence and brought the new (2nd) sequence and placed it on the timeline. I can now add a dissolve however the keyed green is now all black.
      Any suggestions?
      Thanks

I just did something similar to this.
What I did was put the chromakey into a sequence and then manipulated the
movement of the image that is on the green screen. After that I brought it back into the main project and applied the chroma key effect to the motion sequence. After this I applied the transition by way of the chroma key panel by selecting the option on the second panel. I prefer to use the manual setup as opposed to the auto.
At the top of the panel is the color picker and I believe 3 other choices.
Pick the second choice and you should see the effect box.

This is such a basic operation that works flawlessly in most NLE's. Is there any chance this will be fixed in Edius with version 5?

Sorry...in the sequence you also need to place Whatever track you are using for the keyed area on a track below the keyed clip. In other words do your entire chromakeying with keyed clip and underlying clip) in the sequence and then do your 3D PIP work in the original project.

Conversely you can do the exact opposite as Jerry suggests and it will work also.

I agree that there is way too much work involved in Edius' alpha/keying work. While I think there will be some improvement coming up, I doubt that it will be as we all would like. But that is idle speculation.

The irony of all of this is that the Chromakey in Edius is so good! That's what's a bit frustrating. I was so happy with the key but try to do anything with it is ...well.......it's a workaround!

I cant help thinking that the problems all stem from a misguided (or even plain stupid and pig headed) framework in version 1. My NLE experience is now into double figures and Ulead MSP5 and my DPS Perception did things then that we could only dream of doing in Edius.
Multi Keyers and Full Alpha should be there by version 4 but they are not.
The answer of course is to vote with your CC and jump ship but it is finding an app that has the features you want and a without losing the ones you have and like and without a fresh set of Bugs and idiosyncracies......which rule out the apps that I have looked at. ( But I also prefer 3.6 to 4.6)

In an ideal world SW engineers would create NLE SW that editors wanted. It seems all too often we read " this was how it was designed to work".....yet every Tom Dick and Harriet that is either using or selling and supporting it, are screaming out WHY? Sadly it would seem that Canopus/TGV engineers dont have the monopoly on this.

One final thing, we have Feature requests- if we all used it and voted, I am sure it would have more influence but I would bet that only a single % of users ever go there, let alone vote......and let he who is without sin.....etc

All very true but I think the end user (us or we) have to share the blame with wayward software engineers. The number of people that frequent this forum compared to those who use Edius is probably very small and votes here represent the active but not the majority.
I think many here are also looking for a one stop solution and I don't believe that will ever happen.
Solution is to learn other products (tools) and get the best of all worlds and then obviously the tools that don't perform will get dropped. Only then will developers start to take notice.

That's why people like me don't vote anymore, using too many different apps. and all have there own "problems".
I used to get excited about things like this, vote! vote! vote!, let's make it a better product.
After many years using it (since ver. 1.0) I have decided (a while ago) that my energy is better spend with my 2 year old daughter.
SW companies are a bit like politicians ................ frustrations.

While I would agree that it has been a bit of a waste in the past, it now is getting looked at. Not at the rate we would like but it is moving in the right direction. It gets a lot tougher to convince japan that some things are really wanted when only 15-20 people vote for it when it is in the request section. It only takes a couple of seconds.

Like looking out the door to see where the cat escaped to - frustrating. Edius is still one of my tools of choice. Let's see if V5 can keep it there.

While I do agree with Pat, I can understand many users frustrations. Think about it, the most simple feature in even the cheapest editors, full alpha support, is not even in Edius at version 4. The keyer limitation is also a feature workset that should have been fixed (as well as others).
Voting is important, but since GV has taken over I would have expected a little more 'forward thinking' on the part of corporate. Convincing Japan should not even be a concern. It should be GV's decision.

That being said, I still like Edius.
Expecting 1 single program to do everything is a little ridiculous. For example, I know many appreciate the dvd burning section of Edius.
That to me was a feature that could have taken a back seat to actual editing fuctionality. To each his own.

So even voting doesn't mean that your particular feature request will be added and you will have to either accept that or not.
Long time users of Edius, and Canopus from the mid-90's, will more than likely stick. Newer users have not acquired the loyalty of these users.
