  • Firwire Output Problem

I'm running Edius 4.5 on two different laptops. When trying to output the SD timeline through firewire to DV tape the camera screen occasionally flashes blue.

I have used two different firewire cables and two different cameras. I have also tried the print to tape option, but I still get the occasional blue flash on the camera screen.

Before upgrading from 3.63 I would output SD projects to DV tape without problems. What can I do to solve this problem?

    Hea Mark!

How's the camera's capture capability? Do you have full playback control?
(I know your camera's in SD-VCR mode) If not it may be as simple as power off/on on the camera side.

    I can't remember the last time I used Print to Tape. I'm super-jiggy with the TS-writer. :~)

      Hi Rusty,

Yes, I have full deck control within Edius for both cameras. I tried turning the cameras on and off, but it didn't help.

I have been using the TS writer for all of my HDV projects, but we are downconverting within the camera and editing in SD for this Wedding Day Edit, so I didn't even try the TS writer. I'll make an AVI of the project and then try the TS writer.

I thought the TS Writer would only work for mpegs, and yes, it's true. I did convert the HDV project to an M2T and the firewire worked flawlessly, so the problem has to do with outputting a DV project through firwire.

As you well know for WDE's, time is very valuable and it's so much faster to ouput the project to DV tape without any rendering or encoding. That's the way we have done WDE's for years and it's just strange that Edius will not do it now.

From a DV timeline I can encode and burn a DVD in 10 minutes or if I have 15 minutes, I can encode and output to tape an HDV project, but I was really looking for that real time output of 3.5 minutes to DV tape.

If anyone has any ideas I'm open. The WDE is Saturday the 2nd.

          TS Writer won't read .avi!
Sounds like there's nothing wrong on your hardware side eather.

We use the Eduis DVD app to dependably make playable SDE videos.
Generally ours are under 12 min. and the app encodes and burns at about 1:1 (time-wise)
A good time for me (as editor) to decompress.

          Sorry for the non-answer. :~/

Ok... this is very simple but when was the last time you defragmented the drive?

                Hi Mark,

                1) Does it make any difference if the file is rendered?

                2) Does this happen on both laptops? I had a problem where the firewire port went down on my Dell laptop, which I think was caused by plugging in the dv cable while the camera was powered up. Read elsewhere, later of course, to only connect when camera power was off.

                3) What about another app, just for the export part. PPro or Vegas, or even an old and musty P6.5? Does Scenalyser playback?

                4) Does the camera being on mains or battery make any difference?

                5) Telling you how to **** eggs now, but have you gone through all the settings in the Current Project Settings, and set them explicity to your framerate / DV settings, ie leave nothing on Auto.

                6) Does this happen when you are just using the camera as a pass through to the projector, or only when recording to tape? Can you just plug the laptop directly into the projector and bypass all this?

Best wishes for you WDE, nothing like a bit of added stress!

                  Hi Mike,

That's a good place to start, but the drive only had a few minutes of footage on it, practically an empty drive.

I can't believe they put me up against you at WEVA. I can't heckle you...I mean see your presentation now.

                    Hi Ross,

                    1. It was just some test footage that I put in slo mo with dissolves, but yes, I should render it to see if it makes a difference.

                    2. The last time we tried to output on the other laptop it did the same thing. I didn't try that laptop again because Trisha has been editing on it all day. She has a deadline tomorrow. I only connect and disconnect the the camera when the power is off.

                    3. I don't have any other apps. Come on, I'm a loyal Edius user! ;-)

                    4. The camera and laptop were both on electricity.

                    5. All project settings were set properly.

                    6. I haven't tried it as a pass through, only to tape, but I'll give it a try.

                    7. Thanks for all of the good suggestions. My daughter still talks about eating dinner with you and enjoying your accent. She's 17 now and almost all grown up.
