  • DVStorm overlay trouble with new setup

    Customer just got his new setup consisting of the following:

    - Asus P5Q3 Deluxe/WiFi mainboard
    - Intel Q9450 CPU
    - Ati/Amd HD4850 graphic card (hotfix 8.6 catalyst)
    - WindowsXP Pro SP3
    - Edius Pro 4.61

    For a few months more he'll be working with his old DVStorm. So I needed to modify the Canopus.ini as stated in the driver's readme file. Usually things have worked with the following setting:

    [DVStorm-RT.stmcore.conf]
    OverlayMethod=1

    [DVStorm-RT.stmdd]
    OverlayUpdateMethod=0

    But this time the overlay remained black. So I searched my notes and found an old Edius V2.5 setting:

    [DVStorm-RT.stmcore.conf]
    OverlayMethod=1

    [CtsHal]
    OverlayUpdateMethod=1

    Guess what? This setting works although the [CtsHal] parameter is somewhat undocumented. The overlay itself could be better because there's tearing and sometimes a comb like effect.

    So my questions are:

    1. Is there a complete list with parameters for the Canopus.ini?

    2. Can the [CtsHal] parameter harm anything?

    3. Is there anything I can do to get a better overlay with the DVStorm?

    TIA for your answers.

    Both Edius 3 and 4 have overlay settings in the settings menu. In 3 it is settings/hardware/DVStorm RT/ overlay - similar in 4.

      Dear Dave, when using a DVStorm the only thing I can adjust in Edius V6.41 is the way how the overlay will be refreshed.

        I only know that when we put my Storm onto a P5-KE with a 8600GT card last month, the overlay display was black or frozen until I changed the settings. I thought those settings emulated the change to the ini file and added the appropriate lines- seems that what happened here.

        It still does not work as well as it did on the previous settings as I see a ripple in the display window when scrubbing so maybe there is another tweak.

          Dave, Canopus.ini changes require manual work. I really would like to see someone from TGV commenting...

            No comment from me, I don't have any reliable knowledge of the different variables in the canopus.ini file - I just replace/add things as per written instructions.

              Is there at least an explanation why the switches explained in the V4.60 driver package don't work but the ones described back in the V2.5 days will do the job?

                Hi guys,

                I am having the black overlay problem too.. (DVstorm2 pro)

                My new setup...

                Intel core2 quad Q9450, Asus Rampage formula X48, asus 8800GTS 512mb , 4gb ram, Audigy original soundcard and Windows XP SP2 32bit as the operating system.

                No overlay in anything not premiere, not any canopus software apart from using old already capured footage and then i get a really bad overlay in edius v4.

                Is there a method to enable overlay in the capture apps such as canopus capture etc.

                i'm on the verge of getting rid and putting on ebay.

                  I had the same problem when i built the system I now have, and I did the .ini. file thingy, got my overlay going.........but it was not so good, then I had to do a tweek with my drivers for the video card, and that did not work....then I found out that it was me......I checked the input settings and project settings in edius, and found out I was on OCHI...now I have things going as they should,...sort of....

                    Why would that effect the overlay? That would prevent video out from Storm/NX........

                      Check Project Output Settings

                      I have to agree with Alade.

                      I spent over a day reinstalling Edius beginning with version 4.00 and downloading and installing each progressive update searching for a version which would give me output to an external monitor (TV) from my DVStorm 2 card with no results and another day looking through various posts on the forum for clues to the problem. Just a moment ago I decided to check Project Settings and found that the output settings had defaulted to OHCI. On changing to StormRT setting I had my monitor output.

                      Hope this will solve your problem.

                        The overlay in OHCI mode is generated in a different way than the overlay using a DVStorm.

                          problems with DV Storm2 Pro

                          Hi,
                          i had the same problem with overlay, graphique card, ATI HD 3600, Win XP PRO SP3... and this is the way to resolve the problem :
                          First : take the option Overlay update methode in Edius, material control menu.
                          Second : open Catalist control center and force the refresh screen to 50 ou 60 hrz...
                          And Edius run good... ;-)

                            I pulled my Storm out yesterday, I think it's faulty, overlay issues, pixallating footage, it did offer a preview of HDV footage from the timeline but the biggest problem I've been having that my PC would not reboot or shutdown automatically, since I took the Storm out, full function has returned. I don't want to lament the passing of an old friend but with HDV editing it's becoming more redundant every day. I may try again but I think there must be a hardware fault...

                            Regards Phil C.
