  • Missing Video - Sound Only

A fairly new user of Edius Broadcast, I am having a serious issue with P2 material.

Let's say there are 100 clips. I copy the contents of the P2 card into a folder named "P2-1, P2-2, etc." each folder representing the entire contents of a single P2 card using the Ctrl+A copy comand. With the P2 folders copied over to a Media Drive on the dual Xeon machine, in Edius I P2 select the respective folder P2-1 for the first card and all 100 clips populate however approximately 50 to 60 are video and audio and the reminder (last half of the folder contents) are audio only.

What on earth am I doing wrong? For additional informational purposes my Edius was a download trial that was then purchased/dongled.

Are you using P2 select to do the import/copying?

Yes. Just learned that the right way to do it was select the folder of all the P2 material . . that is . . copy all the contents of a single P2 card into a single folder then P2 Select that folder . . not a specific folder (like video) within the P2 folder system.

      So, YES.

Can you try to import a folder directly from the card and see if that works?

i haven't tried it on the project i'm naming in particular at the moment but the last two did the same that this one is doing and we had to send the project out to a final cut pro house to edit it for us since our avid won't see it (720pN@24p) and because we couldn't get the 50% of the vids in :o(

is there the remote-est possibility that there is a software problem from this whole trial to buy without a new fresh install? i mean i don't want to uninstall and reinstall to find out because we have two avid versions on this machine and gads of work and we're not fans of doing anything on these workstations just because a foul up can cost days, weeks, and even months of hardship if you follow.

It's very important that, if copying directly off P2 Media, that you do not mess with the file/folder naming and structure.

You make any change whatsoever and the referencing XML data will not know where to look to bring in all the separate elements together to make a P2 clip.

Failing that, have you read up on the P2 How To document at the EDIUS Training web site?

YES: I have copied the entire contents of the P2 card into a file folder which I appropriately named (in this case) "project name"P2-01 (example: todayshowP2-01) and do this using the CTRL+A comand to copy (to avoid missing anything), then CTRL+V command (to make sure to paste all)

NO: Where is the "P2 How To" document?

This website is for sale! thomsongrassvalley.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, thomsongrassvalley.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

When you copy, you're copying the parent "CONTENTS" folder, right? That's very important. And don't rename that CONTENTS folder!!

So you should have something like this:
                Code:
                \todayshowP2-01
                               |
                               \CONTENTS
                                        |
                                        \AUDIO
                                        \CLIP
                                        \ICON
                                        \PROXY
                                        \VIDEO
                                        \VOICE

That file structure is exactly what I have. May also have other cards too (example: todayshowP2-02, todayshowP2-3, etc.) but the contents of the transfer is always the same. In other words, each folder is like a card unto it's self. So, if I pull a card three times and off load it, there will be three folders (like the examples above).

BTW, I've tried renaming the convention removing the " - " and removing "case" in the event there was a case sensitive issue to the software . . moreover, as I say in this present project there are about 60 clips with video box/image and audio adjacent below and then the rest are just those yellow waveform audio only and when i click the audio ones for detail they show clearly as "audio files" :o(

EDIT: For this P2 Connect project here is what I have:

                    220 files
75 video files with audio on them
69 audio files with NO video
76 video files with audio on them

When you Add Folder in P2Select, be sure to add the enclosing folder - the one ABOVE the CONTENTS folder, not the CONTENTS folder.

So, in Kenneally's example above, you'd Add Folder the \todayshowP2-01 folder.

Also... do any of your clips span multiple cards?

Yes, I did as you said . . I selected the "todayshowP2-01" and actually just learned that since the last time I was trying to use Edius for P2 and had the guy with the MacBookPro and FCP and saw how he did it in Final Cut (he's trying to sell me on Final Cut to get us to go BACK to Apple) and so I did Edius the same way and got what I have now.

Formerly doing P2 Select, I just hit the Video Folder about a dozen times selecting as many as I could and eventually they all appeared but also just like the present situation the first approx 1/4 to 1/2 of the vids show up as vdeo, the middle approx 1/4 to 1/2 are audio only, and the last 1/5 to 1/3 are video and audio like the first part.

Weird to say the least. Leave it to me to find the most complicated of sorts :o(

BTW, this lot is not over two cards but I do often do that. Why is this a different work flow OR was it just a thought that this might be the issue?

                          It was just a thought.

Hmm, do you have a "fresh" P2 card you make a few recordings with and check? I'm wondering if maybe somehow clips on the card got "orphaned" and excluded from the indexing so the camera ignores them, but P2 Select picks them up because they still digitally exist.

Actually we don't erase the cards we reformat them 100%. A lot of ppl we know just erase the card but we format them 100% just because of a potential "ghost" (orphan as I think you are saying) as we've heard it termed.

As I say, every Edius project we've had on P2 has been this way and we have multiple P2 cards AND we haven't seen this on the Avid software. I can hear the thoughts . . . then why not use the Avid software? Because our Avid doesn't support this particular efficient format. The 720pN@24p allow the 16Gb card to go from 17 mins to about 42 or 43 mins with virtually no image loss to the average viewer which is quite awesome to us wherein 2 cards is enough time to cover virtually all our field projects without having to offload in the field so to speak.

So if I have this right, the exact same material you've copied off the media that is failing in EDIUS, works perfectly in Avid on the same system?
