Old DV user, now HDV help please!

Just made the jump to light speed. Picked up my new Hvr-V1u and hve never tried to do anything in HDV before. I'm using Edius 4.24 and hve a HP laptop with AMD turion 64 and Ati radeon200M, XP SP2. I've edited DV on this laptop before althought it runs out of steam rather quickly in referencce to real time but its now my main edit machine. It has the firewire port and thats why I wanted to try the 1080i HDV output from the Sony HVR-V1 camera.
Here's what the camera was set to record "HDV, 24p"; there are other setting so if it is not possible to capture this to Edius, please inform me as to the proper setting in reference to HDV.
After recording, I started a new project and set it to :
"Generic OHCI HD 24Hz, HDV 1080/23.98p
Canopus HQ codec
I'm not sure if that was what I should have done, anyway the capture screen said inializing and never did start
I then went to Input Settings and selected Generic OHCI HDV, and HDV 1080/23.98p/over 59.98 (what does this mean)
Still could not get Edius to cature , but could get a picture on the overlay sceen , but its motion was erratic with some break up. May be it the computer horse power?

2. This cpu comes in two different flavors, one is for power the other is for battery life. Make sure you have the one that is geared towards power.

3. 23.98p/over 59.98 means that the footage is being worked on in it's native format of 24P but is beinf exported out as fields to the preview monitor.

2. I'm not sure, but here are the details:
AMD Turion 64 Mobile Processor ML-40 with Power NowTech(2.2 Ghz,1MB L2 cache, up to 1800 Mhz system bus
# actually the operating system is WinXP mediacenter not pro

I hooked the camera up tho my main edit system thru the firewire card and made the same settings and got the same results ( studdering video with breakups.)
Under Generic HDV , there are options to use Canopus HQ or Generic Mpeg TS
I tried both.
This machine is a P4 3.2 gig w/ Win XP pro SP2 , both have the latest ver. of Edius.

George, here are a few points for you:

1. There may be variations to this because you're using 24P - I am not sure. I shoot in HDV 1080i.

2. You must edit in HQ. You cannot come close to editing the native HDV on that machine.

3. With that machine, you cannot capture to HQ on the fly, meaning that you do not have enough machine to take the HDV from the camera, convert to HQ, and write it to your hard drive at the same time.

4. To get to HQ on that machine, you must go in 2 steps.

5. First, you should capture MPEG TS, which is just transfering over from camera to your computer the HDV stream without changing it. My desktop is almost exactly the same as your main editing machine, and that's what I must do. Note: just because the recorder/player window in edius stutters during capture, that does not mean the capture is bad.

6. Second, right click the captured file in the bin and convert\file to HQ.

7. Once you get this working, you then can look at using PCE to capture the HDV to a watched folder.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. TBone you are right on the money . I was able to capture in the 1080i 60 setting and edit on my laptop in the HQ format. It worked without a hicup! The Sony HVR-v1 produces great picture quality.
