HD Blu Ray Process

What the exact/best process are people using to Author or just offload to BluRay because I have heard mixed results. I am using the Sony EX1 camera that uses those EX Cards.

I have a mixed environment from FinalCut Pro on Mac and Edius on the PC.

I know that Encore CS3 is not the best encoder. Looking into maybe Sorenson Squeeze with the VLC Codec or something else then use Encore to just build the links and disk structure and burn. I hear Vegas is good to do a direct offload onto BluRay disk.

Aworkflow that someone is using for authoring and/or offloading will be great.

I have good success with using ProCoder and the preset Shueardm puts out (in the ProCoder sticky) using MPEG 2 HD, then author in Encore, if you don't have ProCoder you can use Encore to encode MPEG2 HD and it is still good, but I don't have any good result when using H.264.

Some say potatoes, and some say potaatoes! There are many ways to get to where you want to go. Khoi certainly has one that's worked well for him. Please search this forum for my post entitled "100% Blu-Ray Success", which began a long conversation regarding Blu-Ray DVD's. With a SONY EX-1 you need to pay particular attention to what format video will be compliant for Blu-ray. For instance 50p is no good with 1080 frame size.

My suggestion is to shoot everything in 1080p 23.98, edit with EDIUS, output Mpeg 2 at the same settings, import to Encore or DVDit PRO HD and you're set to go.

BTW. Sorenson Squeeze VC-1 is not an option, it is not going to work.

Does this mean recording 1080 50p and going out to blue ray via a player to a 1080p lcd or plasma is a no no?

Or is it that encoders cant handle it?

If you look at the official blu-ray specs you will notice 1 'p' format in 1920x1080, 24p(rounding). In order to put a progressive file onto a blu-ray disc you have to use the 24p format(NTSC).
The reason Mark suggested shooting in 24p was to keep everything the same from start to finish. Smart move!

Let me just add that unless the television is capable of true 24p playback it will be converted to interlace anyway. Keep that in mind as well.

Just out of interest I shot 1080p 25 on our new Sony Z7P (native), edited in Edius as is and output to DVDit HD Pro and burnt to Blu-Ray DVD and it works just fine in brilliant resolution and colour.

What are you encoding the file with? Is DVDITHDPRO doing the encoding?
Is Procoder 3 doing the encoding?

I don't think that DVDITPROHD will accept non compliant files but rather reencode to suit it's need.

Adobe doesn't enter the picture and Encore has always been limited with its input.
DVDit Pro accepts the Edius file as an HQ AVI and only re-encodes on output.

Obviously, you missed the whole point of posting the charts.
I was merely showing what frame rates and resolutions were COMPLIANT
for making a blu-ray DVD.

Your right though, DVDITPROHD will accept the HQ file and encode it to whatever the parameters that have been set in the encoder section....as long as they are compliant.
Encore CS3 will do this as well. Some have reported issues with Canopus HQ files. I only export to uncompressed prior to transcoding so I have not experienced this issue.

Both of these programs have encoders that will do the job. Neither encoder will do as good of a job as Procoder 3 or Sorrenson 5.
So you know, Encore CS3 will do H.264 on top of the Mpeg2 HD.

I'm glad you are getting good results with DVDITPROHD.
