  • New to Edius question

    Hello,

I've been using REXRT since the early days (actually started with the original canopus M1 in '98). I've edited approx. 100 wedding videos a year with my RT and it's finally time to move into a 21st century system. I have vegas 7 on a laptop and I just bought Final cut a few weeks ago and I hate it. I can't believe the rendering required. I have Edius pro 3 and I'm leaning toward staying with Canopus. I have new hd cameras but I don't really want to go all hd yet. I'm thinking of shooting hd and delivering in sd 16x9. Is there a good workflow in Edius for this? Should I upgrade to Edius 4?

Thanks in advance for your response.

We shoot, edit and archive in HDV.
Output to DVD and our archive can go to Blu-Ray when the clamor begins!

You should have no problem with those cameras. Convert on capture to Canopus HQ and edit away

            If you havn't already...

Download a demo of 4.(whatever) to really get a sense of the new work flow. Capture your files as HQ and have fun!

Hi, I'm new to Edius also but for what it's worth, here is my experience so far. I use Edius 4.61 Broadcast, I can edit 4 cameras in PAL HDV timeline (1440 x 1080i) no problems; no rendering. We have a Sony EX1 which I simply drop the files straight into the bin (using the Sony Clip-browser) and onto the timeline - no conversion required. We have also a Sony HVR-Z1P and a Sony HVR-V1P. I capture in HDV using Canopus HQ from the firewire for these two cameras. We also have a Sony HDR-SR7E which is a AVCHD camera. I convert these files using the Canopus AVCHD2HQ converter. So 3 cameras are editing in Canopus HQ codec but the EX1 in native format. As stated, I can edit these 4 cameras in multicamera edit without rendering. Currently I transcode to standard def for DVD production but intend to offer Blu-ray soon. I transcode using 2-pass VBR in MPEG-2 Elementary stream so Encore CS3 doesn't have to transcode. Now here is what I find interesting: If I transcode directly from the HDV timeline, it takes 5 hours to transcode a 1 hour timeline. But, if I change the project settings to SD (PAL 720 x 576 50i 16:9), it only takes 2 hours to transcode the same timeline. And when I play the resulting DVDs, I can't tell the difference.

"And when I play the resulting DVDs, I can't tell the difference. "

Look again, the dvd made from HD timeline is much worse, look at the jaggy edges on anything that is diagonal.

Thanks for your comments. I did look again, very closely. I'm hard-pressed to see any difference when played on our TV (which is relatively new), but I can see a difference when played full screen on my 24" computer model. The diagonal lines are cleaner from the version transcoded from the HDV timeline, but not a lot of difference. So if I'm in a hurry, I'll transcode from SD timeline but of course, I'll only do it if I don't have any graphics or titles.
