so tell me if you have had success with pans and tilts instead of just static shots being slowed

yes i used interlaced for the footage i am having probs with

is it going to be better if i shoot 720p in future

the only thing is i am using storm 2 with e4.6 and am not sure if i can edit in hd with the storm card enabled for output to tv/monitor

As I understand it, Storm is not compatible with HD, fullstop. If you're going to work in HD then you need to ditch the Storm.
Many JVC cammy's including the 101 have problems with 720p and panning and tilting or fast action. Progressive scan needs a fast lens. Your problem is originating in the camera.
You solve this problem by being creative in your shots and avoiding cross lens action or fast panning.
Out of interest we don't get this effect (as much) on the Sony Z7P using the 25p mode. Probably has something to do with the progressive CMOS chips.

This has been a perplexing problem that has bugged me for some time
All my cameras have "FSP" Frame sliced progressive and all present a different version of the same video the worst is my FX1 that has so much jitter on movement it is not usable, the next best is the Canon HV20 which has jitter but I would not use it, my Cannon A1 is better but still not where I would like it.
The thing that really bugs me is
When I look back on my old "Super 8" film that runs at 18 FRAMES the jitter is not visible, it seems to me when "FSP" is used the frame rate slows to 12.5 FPS in PAL or 15FPS in NTSC which could mask this effect.
What are your thoughts or knowledge on this, I am waiting till I either upgrade to another camera or see some footage from a true "Progressive" camera before I move
          Regards Barry

What you need to remember, Barry, is that "progressive" scan on the Sony's and the Canon are only software solutions. The new Z7 and 270 Sony cameras have now got progressive chips and are a fully fledged progressive camera as well as interlaced.
Jitter, as you call it, can be the sum of not only your camera but your computer and viewing screen. My FX1 and Z1 were fine but the two "progressive" JVC cameras (the 101 and 251) I reviewed for the media suffered the jitters to some extent on fast panning and action.
The problem revolves around the frame rate, the perception of the eye to relay movement. In the film days the impetus was to move to 24fps for professional cameras whilst consumer cameras started at 16fps and later moved to 18fps and then variable. But 24fps is the benchmark where the eye is deceived. If you can shoot and view at a higher frame rate then perceptibly the picture will be better.
Having said that, many of these issues are dealt with as we improve the electronics of our cameras/projectors/monitors. (Oh! and edit software).

great discussion on the problems of slowmo on pans and tilts

it is really bugging me now and i was thinking of giving prem pro 2.0 a try to give me the effect i need then reimport the footage to e4.6

i only have shot 25i and 50i so all shots are interlaced
but the pans and tilts i have need to be slowed and i cannot find a satisfactory way to do this so far

i hope we can resolve this prob and hope that gv can find an answer

Hi foundry. As far as I know, there is no 25i video on the HD201 (or anywhere else for that matter). The only interlaced formats with this cam are 1080i and 576i (PAL version). So if you are shooting 720 as you mentioned in an earlier post it must be 720p. Having said that, I think shooting 50p should give great slo-mo. Try setting the project and clip properties to Progressive to avoid unnecessary deinterlacing.

                  richard thanks for that
i meant that i have been shooting only interlaced

i have tried a mixture of all the presets available to test for a decent slow motion and still no success

so what combination in your opinion works the best
from camera settings to nle settings

Hi foundry. I'm still not really sure what settings you are using for shooting, but if I was using the HD201 and wanted to apply slo-mo in post, I would shoot 720p50 (1280 x 720 at 50 fps progressive). Ideally the Edius project settings should match the footage, but the big question is whether Edius is compatible with the 50p output from the HD201. If Edius can capture and handle this it should produce great results.

thanks once again but i am shooting interlaced sd all the time as i my clients don't need hd
my problem is only pans and tilts
all other static camera shots are fine when slowed but i cannot find a preset from camera or edius that gives satisfactory results from pans or tilts

I have once short clip, about minute, with motion and dinamic scenes, some editing software replaced top and bottom filed frame reverse. I have default field order in edius (bottom for pal DV) but in clip first half picture is second frame and second is first. Video on normal speed look poor.
Maybe your camera format and editing software don't match
Try to convert clip to different codec before you slow down...
