What is the function of ripple delete? What can you do with it?

It deletes the selected clip(s) and then shuffles up all the clips on the right such that they fill the space created. Use in conjunction with "Sync Mode". It is explained quite well in the help files.

Biopic is correct. The is a handy tool for deleting a clip and then pulling up the clips to the right to fill the void...all in one keystroke.
If the timeline is complex with muliple layers of audio such as music, sound fx, narration, interview, etc Ripple Delete becomes more of a challenge because it will pull up all those tracks as well. I tell people to master "undo" before playing with Ripple Delete. The results might not be what you desire.
Another way to stitch a timeline back together after a clip is deleted is to simply select all the clips to the right...or left if needed...and just drag all the clips to the desired position on the timeline manually. You can select all the clips "laso" style. I like to use shift-end or shift home.

It' s maybe good to notice that you can also use Alt+N/M/Delete as a key shortcut, so there's no need turning ripple delete on.

At least, that's how I use it, if 'normal' deleting isn't enough.

One thing that ripple mode doesn't adjust are markers ("V"). I would like to see an option for moving markers in a future release.

ALT+X also cuts a clip and ripples upcoming clips :)
