  • Canopus HQ

I read somewhere that the Canopus HQ codec can store alpha channel information. If so how do you imbed the information?

For example if you were producing a logo animation in 3D Studio Max that was to key over vision, how do render a Canopus HQ avi with alpha?

    Or am I misunderstanding something?

If you have Edius 4 installed at the same system with 3ds max you will be able to render directly to HQ within 3ds max. If not you can import the rendered sequence inside Edius and then convert it to Canopus HQ. Alpha Channel Information will be retained...

Also if for any reason you don't want to render in a format that stores alpha channel you can render the alpha matte seperately in 3ds max and then combine the two files inside Edius... (using the convert to Luminance matte feature)... This is something that I don't recommend though...

Thanks but I have tried this many times. I do have Edius 4 on my system with 3D Max but I when I render to Canopus HQ the alpha is not retrained.

Also when I import a files sequence (that has alpha) into Edius and render it to a Canopus HQ clip, the alpha is still not retained.

        Is there a setting somewhere?

Render it to QT rgb with millions+ and when the file is in the bin, right click the file and choose convert. This will have your file saved as HQ with alpha.
It is a workaround, but it does work

            Thanks,

            that seems to work well!

That will save me many hours of rendering as most of my projects are multilayered and involve sequenced files made in Max.

Yeah, make sure to render out your 3dmax stuff to uncompressed or lossless (former is advised) and then convert to Canopus HQ from within Edius so you won't have to re-render in the future if you need to have the originals.

Also I don't recommend using QuickTime files in Edius, there is a bug that has not been fixed yet (color and luminosity are not kept consistent)...so I advise you to use "No Compression" (aka uncompressed) when you render from 3dmax...then import the avi file into Edius, and right click then Convert to > Canopus HQ (use Online).

Yep thanks... I can only get to work with sequenced TGA files with no compression... is that what you mean by "no compression"?

Frame sequences are fine, as long as there is no compression, you'll be fine. Also you can use Canopus Lossless when you bring your TGA sequence into Edius....It usually cuts down the unompressed datarate by 50%, and it has better quality than Canopus HQ.
