  • PLEASE HELP! - Old Project won't open.

I've got a problem. A client wants changes to a project from 2004. Now I'm pretty careful about backing up all the files I need. I was able to load all the footage and restore my project file. It opens perfectly in Edius (ver 4.6 and 3.6) but as soon as I try to scrub or play the timeline I get a crash.

I have tried starting a new project and importing the old one - No Good.

I am starting to panic now as I've got show them something for next week. Anyone any ideas ???

I don't even know what version of Edius I was using back then, I guess 1.5... Is there anyway I can tell from the .epj file ????

    Any help GREATLY appreciated.

Rats. That means it can be anything v1-v3

        What's the source content?

Have you tried deliberately misplacing the source clips and then relinking them one-by-one to see what might be causing the crash? I've done that in the past to diagnose a fault.

I have 'misplaced' the files and relinked them, though not one by one since there are well over 300 clips in the project. if you think that would really help I'll do it,heck I'll try anything right now, but I suspect the source video files are fine since I use quite a few different projects.

It could be an effect that's causing the crash, too. With all clips "missing," are you able to scrub the timeline without any crash?

Means there is something with one of the effects that has since been changed in a later version, most likely.

I'm sorry to say, but I think the only thing that will get you out of this situation quickly, is to restore an older version (pre 4.5) of EDIUS on a system you have, to load the project into.

But I've already got 2 systems one with 3.6 and another with 4.6 and I'm getting the same problem with BOTH !

Can you try to open a brand new project and then go to sequence import and import the original timeline in?

You may need to go back further - as you said, you aren't sure which version you used and it may have even been v1.x.

Another thing (clutching at straws now) would be to try isolating the EPJ from its associated EWS file. EPJ files open in older versions of EDIUS, EWS in newer ones. In older versions of EDIUS, loading the EPJ could force a rebuild of the EWS file..

(btw don't delete files, just relocate/rename them)

OK I created a completely clean XP Installation with the intent of installing ver 1.5. To do this I have to start by installing Ver 1 which will not install without the Storm (Which I've shelved years ago).

My frustration is starting to turn to anger. I SHOULD be able to open a project with a newer version of the software. I've spent my entire weekend on this and I am nowhere.

                        Anyone, any ideas at all......

Well, this is a shot in the dark, but I'd bring up the project, go to "settings" and change every one of them, and then change each back to the correct setting. Hopefully this will reset the buggered-up one (if that's the problem).

If your project loads will it let you remove ALL filters on each track? CTRL+A on highlighted track then SHIFT+ALT+F. I had this problem on current release when I made a mess of saving filter set for a particular clip and touching anything else would highlight everything and just lock up. I solved this by closing Edius, opening again, loading project, highlighting the track this problem clip was on and deleting all filters for the track. I was trying to save another colour correction/sharpening/YUV setting for the track and had the last one so that I could reload. But this did solve this problem of lockup for me.

                              Problem Solved !!!

That was a very good idea. Didn't work though.

I did however isolate the problem. There was a photoshop file (a logo transparency) that was resized (using layout) and displayed as a bug in the lower left corner. When I deleted this file from the timeline everything was fine. HOWEVER I could put the file back on the timeline everything was OK.

Edius has a problem with files from older versions if you are using the Layout function. Anyone with similar problems please take note as this could save you a lot of trouble.

Much thanks to everyone who tried to help. ;)
