  • Tape out malfunction on 4.24

    Hey Everyone,

I'm in a tight spot. I can't get tape out to work on 4.24, or the Mpg Ts writer. I get 'invalid signal' from both my cam and my desktop Sony HDV player from the Ts writer, while the tape out function just gives me an error message straight away.

The TS writer gets the recorders to kick off, but then it shuts down with 'invalid signal'.

I have no problem capturing though...

    Any ideas?

    TIA

    M

        Hi,

Yes, I have tried another cable. Same problem. It is not the cable however, because I can get output from Premiere Pro 2 without a problem. And like I said, I have no problem capturing from the HDV player with the same cable and settings.

Has no one else had a problem?

        best,

        Mike

"or write protection on your tape?"

sure, as requested by the Canopus administrators, I only write to this board as a last resort. i have tried several different tapes. The hardware is all ok....any suggestions? i'm like crippled without tape out...

            Some thoughts:

            - Are both units in HDV mode?

            - Service Pack 2 installed?

            - Are the units correctly installed (device manager)?

            - Are other applications running while you open the TS writer?

            - Are other devices connected to other firewire ports during export?

              Zorro; Some thoughts:

              - Are both units in HDV mode?

i'm only using one device at a time, but yes...

              - Service Pack 2 installed?

              latest updates installed. computer online.

              - Are the units correctly installed (device manager)?

they show up on the list and Premiere Pro export to tape works

              - Are other applications running while you open the TS writer?

              no
              -
Are other devices connected to other firewire ports during export?

no, i have disconnected everything except the HDV firewire cable...

this is a new problem. before, i could export

has anyone else had the same problem?

              best,

              Mike

you get what you pay for -- I have never written anything back to tape with any version of edius, until I tried just a few minutes ago -- but I got exactly the same results as you with 4.24

using HQ footage on the timeline that I had captured from Sony HC1 as HDV 1080i and converted to HQ

                    project settings:
output device: generic OHCI HD 60 Hz
                    output format: HDV 1080/29.97p

all settings correct on HC1 per Sony manual

in edius, print to tape (with or without timecode):
immediate error message: An error has occurred during tape out

in edius, follow help instructions to first create an .m2t file using print to file, and then fire up Capture\mpeg TS writer to write that file to the HC1:

as you say, edius sends the signals to the HC1 to take the HC1 off of pause and start recording, but after a second or 2 it says:
                    Invalid Input Signal
and even if I let it keep recording, there is nothing on the tape

so there's your confirmation (unless we're both doing the same thing wrong): 4.24 print to tape messed up

Thanks a mill for confirming this in NTSC, my system is PAL but has 'exactly' the same error messages. So now we know that it doesn't work in NTSC either.

Obviously no one on this forum is writing things to tape, but this is the cheapest and safest storage solution for big projects. Having a backup from tape is essential for piece of mind, like where I'm making this movie that's taking me nearly 5 years and I have to keep adapting to the hardware/software to complete the project.

So what do we do now?

Maybe there's a little misunderstanding. Some rules:

                            1. You can't export a timeline to a HDV device directly. You have to render a *.m2t file first (use either SpeedEncoder or PCE) and then use the TS Writer to write back to HDV tape.

                            2. The TS Writer can't work with HQ files, just *.m2t.

zorro, thanks for clearing that up - so the first error is actually user error:

but we still have this error, which looks like edius error:
