  • Black Thumbnails in DVD Menu Export

    Hi Guys

Just had a strange problem burning to DVD from the Edius 4.61 timeline, no matter where I set the thumbnail button images to in the DVD menu editor they turn out as black thumbnails on the burned DVD menu & not as thumbnails of the selected part of the timeline. I have tried re-rendering the project & even opening it on another PC, but it still results in black thumbnail buttons.
    Any ideas?

    Regards

    Dave.

try testing the VIDEO_TS in a software player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD to confirm that the problem is not unique to one player

Black Thumbnails in DVD Menu Export

      Hi Anton

Thanks for the reply, I should have mentioned that I have already tried the disc on several Set Top players & also on a couple of PC's using different software.

Edius uses Quicktime player in some of the still creation processes, can you confirm that QT player is present and working correct

do you see the thumbs while creating the menu, are the thumbs coming from the section in between a chapter that corresponds to the chapter

example, chapter 1 still should come from a timeline section between the beginning and the first marker which is chapter 2

Black Thumbnails in DVD Menu Export

          Hi Anton

QT is installed & is working fine on all PC's that this project has been tested on.
Thumbnails are between mark in & mark out of the sequences used for the DVD, & they update correctly when in the DVD plug-in menu editor.

DVD consists of a single menu page with 2 chapters created from 2 separate timeline sequences, ie Chapter 1 = Seq 1 & Chapter 2 = Seq 2 with thumbs set between the respective mark in & mark out points.

All edits update fine in the menu editor & reflect in the burned DVD that is all except the thumb nails which are fine in the editor but black on the burned DVD.

This has never been an issue before so it is a strange one.

          Regards

          Dave.

can you do a quick test

start a new project and add a minute of color bars in one sequence only

add 3 markers and in and out, this will give you 4 chapter thumbnails, providing the following is ticked, see screenshot

then burn the DVD and test

I have not tested making a DVD with more than 1 sequence, maybe that causes the problem?

This is not a new problem. The thumbnails sometimes do not "stick". This is especially true if you choose thumbails other than the default ones when you open the Edius DVDmaker.
              It can be maddening.
One quick work-a-round that has worked for me is to change your thumbnails and then hit "Return to Menu". When asked to save, hit "yes". Once you back at the timeline, start the DVDmaker again. In essence, you've saved your changes to the thumbnail. Nothing is foolproof, but give it a try.

Black Thumbnails in DVD Menu Export

                Thanks Anton/Jim

Anton things work as expected with your test, however I seem to have resolved things with this project for the time being.

On my sequence timelines I have other edits that I do not want to export these edits are towards the beginning of the various timelines the part I wish to export to DVD in each sequence is toward the end of the timelines.

I have a sequence set for each piece in a performers repetior & I have cut each piece together from there respective takes ie wide & close up (single camera shoot) then made the appropriate final edit & it is this I was wanting to export to the DVD choosing some choice stills from the action for the menu thumbnails . So after marking the I/O of each sequence I went to the DVD export set the menu & thumbnails & all looked good except the burned DVD has black thumbnails with no apparent way to fix.

I have just discovered that if I remove the clips from the beginning of the timeline I now get my thumbnails back for this I am gratefull but it is not as convenient a way to work as it could be, I would like to keep my previous cuts in place for making changes if needed.

Any how thanks again for your much appreciated help & valuable input & in taking time to respond.

                Regards

                Dave.
