6K Bitrate vs. 8K bitrate DVD's

Hey all! I've been outputting to 8000 bitrate DVD's (CBR) since I was led to believe that was a popular DVD format and the highest quality which was compatible with most DVD players. Recently I've been informed by more than one that my 8K's will are not recognized in their DVD players. Is this because most players may not recognize above a 6000 bitrate CBR? I noticed that the new Procoder 3 has as a standard bitrate 6000 as a default. What say you, experts! ! !

What brand media you use is very important.

I still keep my DVD's below 7,500 TOTAL for audio+video on Taiyo Yuden 16x discs (Japanese made, and I burn at 8x for safety). I have gotten only 1 complaint in the past 4 years...and I told them to buy a new DVD player :)

What is your audio? PCM or AC3? If PCM, then if your video is 8000 you add 1500 for uncompressed PCM and that's a total of 9,500. Use AC3 256kb in PC3 (uncheck "auto gain") and keep the video max of 7200 and you will be fine.

What Dave said is correct the medium is a BIG problem, I use RITEK, TDK, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden with 8000k VBR 2 pass and AC3 Audio encoded at 256kb and have had no returns!
BUT if you use PCM Audio reduce the bit rate to 6000 or a lot of players will spit the dummy

all RITEK disks I made that are older than a year are no longer readable by anything

these are the G0Y5 ones

no problems with Tayo Yuden here at all

So far no returns, maybe they thought the video was so bad they threw them away, He He
The only ident I can find on them is BRTK0048 16x Printable and the printing is available all the way to the center and they were burnt at 4X, min available on the burner.
Have checked some of my older masters and all seem OK one I know is 2 years old!, you have me worried now, thanks!

Agreed with Anton. I had a few cheap Riteks and I can't read data off them, good thing I have backups.

I buy my Taiyo Yudens from here
I've ordered about 1,000 from them so far, always get the same media.

Thanks all, I now have shivers down my back waiting for complaints.
Waited 12 months before outputting in RITEK, only some, having had serious problems with other "CHEAP" disks and the originals still work.
At least all the projects are backed on tape and HD so replacement is not a problem but it is embarrassing when complaints start to appear

I use maxell printable DVDs and I have no complaints the past 3 years. Only one time and that's because customer had scratched it...
I use variable bitrate at 6000, maximum 8000 and minimum 2000.

Ritek is known as a relatively dodgy and inconsistent brand. I use Taiyo Yuden hub-printable DVDs.

Although I now use TY discs, I have used Riteks for years with no problems.

The problem with ritek though is that the dye is produced in 3 places I think, and only one is a good one. In Europe Conrexx supply the high quality Ritek discs, sticking with those has been fine for me, until I struggled to get them, as more and more re-sellers ditch this supplier in favour of the cheaper ones and cash in on the Ritek named dye.

Hi Dave...and others.
What I failed to notice is that the 8K mode I've been burning in doesn't take into account the audio - as you so wisely point out. That's the main reason I've been getting inconsistancies in player compatibilities. I've now reduced the load to about 7.5K INCLUDING audio, and will see how that fairs. I've been using Maxell for many years, with good success, but will now look into the TY's. Thanks for all the input.
