Why does capture sometimes make clips?

It's not the 2gb or 4gb limit, as first clip captured was 2 1/2 hours long at some 30 something gb.
I looked at joins and there is nothing noticeable, but could be something I can't see, it's not a change of camera/cut/transition/snow, it's right in the middle of things.
I might recapture it and see what happens, but then again, I have another 6 tapes to capture yet. Next one is 53 mins in and all one clip so far...........

this can happen when there were interruptions to the incoming signal caused by snow or blank spots on tape
to avoid this, use a TBC, then snow can go for hours and you will get perfect results because the TBC supplies a constant stable output

Came back and have just captured the remaining 27 mins and it has made 7 clips from this.
As such it isn't a problem as they go on the timeline and out pops a dvd, but why has it done that?
I haven't changed any settings,
Capture front bay, composite as dv50i, same as I always do.
Computer wasn't turned off while I went out.

I don't know how do you set that limit...
