  • Exported dissolve transitions show flicker

    Hi,

All sequences I export from EDIUS 4.xx via ProCoder 3 or ProCoder Express to mpg, avi etc. - doesn´t matter which format I choose - show a distinct and annoying flicker in the dissolve transitions - whereas the same transitions run absolutely smooth when played directly from the completely rendered timeline on both PC monitor and external LCD-TV (and on the videos exported to tape).

The exported transitions (standard 2D dissolves between 6 and 30 frames) flicker, i.e. they look like an old movie with its distinct variations between lighter and darker frames.

I work with flawless high end equipment and have tried a lot of avenues to solve the problem - to no avail so far.

Any idea what could cause it?

    Regards,

    Peter

Is it a flicker in the sense of reversed field ordering?

I know that some transitions allow for rendering in reverse order..

Also, have you tried a test where you pre-render a transition in EDIUS before exporting, to see what happens?

I have tried all possible combinations of field order (uff, lff etc.) in the project settings and the F11 export settings - no change in the flickering output of the dissolves.

Also, I have pre-rendered my transitions with shift-G before exporting - to no avail.

I am working in a PAL environment.

Can the following so we can help you?
        Go in the project folder.
IF you used shift g you will see trans... in the rendered folder.

Can you upload one of those trans....renders so we can have a look at it?

Ok - what format is the source content on the timeline, and is it affecting both a same-track transition and multi-track (A/B) transition?

Here´s a short example, exported from a timeline with: PAL HDV, 1.440x1.080, 50i, uff - to: mpg2, 352x576, uff, Standard quality. No multitrack transitions.

Hmm, it appears ok on my machine here (v4.61).

What are you previewing with, to see the flickering? Is it burnt to a DVD and played on a television? Or are you using Windows Media Player?

I looks ok here. ( a bit blurry)
                What I did was unzipped,
Made a pal project and played it via the nx to a broadcast monitor.

Can you upload that same piece in full resolution dv?
                What was the source?

For playback of the exported version - doesn´t matter if mpg, or avi or hq avi - I use the latest Windows MediaPlayer Classic and other players on two Dell 24´´ PC-LCD monitors plus a new LCD tv. The same effect shows on other machines, too.
As compared to the dissolves played directly from the timeline, the exported versions show that annoying flicker - which both of you obviously do not see - maybe because you don´t have the timeline version as comparison.
Playing back the exported mpg or avi in Edius (4.61) shows smooth transitions.
Sorry I cannot upload another version of the dissolve clip in higher quality because the forum rules do not allow zip >350 KB. Source material is PAL HDV with 1.440x1.080, digitized with the Canopus HQ avi codec.

Sounds to me more like WMP Classic decoding the stream in some strange way with regards to the interlacing. I'm struggling to find a fault in WMP (the Microsoft release), VLC and EDIUS.
