  • Explaining working with High Def

Ok, been reading all afternoon about HD and Edius and I am not quite clear on things just yet, hopefully someone can answer this for me.

As far as capturing, is it better to down convert through the camera or later when you export? Is there a quality difference?

Also...am I able to export in HD? I have been editing this afternoon and PCE doesn't seem to have any options. I did export the HD line to DV and it looks ok.

I just bought a new computer with an Nvidia PCI-E 512MB 8500 GT card in it...but from what I am reading I need some NX card to do HD ? Sorry if this seems general but I am getting no where fast and need to know what kind of things I need to get this done.

I also have a Pioneer Blu Ray writer in my new machine and want to be able to get this to my clients when i shoot on high def.

1: to Export you make a HDV file using either "Speedencoder" my pref or PC Express.
1a: Connect your camera via Firewire
1b: From the Menu select "Capture"<> MPEG TS Writer
1c: Click the "+" button to add the file, Make sure the correct device is selected
1d: Click the "Write" button bottom left and the file will be transferred back to the camea.
2: I prefer to keep it in HD all the way even though there are some problems with the final down convert (Use the workaround, once set up is a breeze) or downconvert from the camera, not much in it, your choice.
3: To view the timeline in realtime you need an NX card, to overcome this I use 2 22" WS monitors the left with the Edius monitor in single mode taking up the complete monitor and Timeline etc on the right.
My solution has been to edit in short Sequences, between 3 -7 minutes and when happy output to a HDV file to a DVICO A5000 player and then check it is OK on the TV
Cheeper than an NX and less troublesome, sorry GV
4: Be careful with Blueray as most of the early players will not accept the burnt disks, this is now changing though but keep this in mind as it will be a minefield out there for a while.

I don't get seeing HD footage in realtimeon Edius...I just captured and edited in HD and outputted the footage in SD and it looks fine.

I have a great card and a 22" WS High Def monitor.

My Tv station has captured thousands of hours of HDV from Sony Z1's into Edius. We capture through firewire and let edius convert to Canopus HQ 1440x1080i on the fly. Picture is very good and the HQ plays perfectly from the timeline. We do all our renders in HQ as well.

Output depends on need. We play back all our TV shows as HQ avi's from a server (no tape). If we need to go to tape in HD, we use the Sony Z1 camera using the system described above. If we want an SD copy on tape we output to a DVCPro deck. Client copies are made using the DVD maker in Edius. This is very quick, easy, and quality is excellent. We even created our own customized backgrounds for a more professional presentation.

Some might differ, but HQ is the best part of Edius.

Thats fine BUT if you want to eventually output onto Blueray you will need to be editing in HDV or there is no point.
All my productions have been saved in HDV for future extension for when C31 goes digital (if ever) or Blueray becomes viable.
Having the Edius monitor to the MAX size on the LH monitor makes it easy to assess clips for HD where FOCUS is just so important, and as Edius is continually working in realtime when using filters etc it is so easy to immediately assess the extent of correction.
If you downcode to SD from the camera you will have to re edit in HD for Blueray!

I really need to sit down with someone and get my head around this, just when I master everything there is to know it seems, then HD throws everything out the door.

Who knows what the next format will be.
