Thanks Mike, but we're using HQ AVI's anyway so a different problem.
I've since had a long conversation with nVidia (and ATI) who confirm Kenneally's prognosis. The way video is handled in Vista is entirely different to XP (and ultimately will be much better). nVidia has written the new API and it's now up to developers like GV/Canopus and Adobe to incorporate that in future releases of their NLE's to make the overlay work across two or more screens.
I'm holding my breath that Edius will include this in V5 when released. (They've already announced it will be Vista friendly). The next release of Adobe will be updated.

The reason you can't get the video out is because HDV has to be in a particular file format and then streamed. So if you want to write back to the camera you have to create a file and then use the TS Writer to send the signal back to the deck or camera.

I have used Video Cards as playback but they just do not match the NX Express for playing back the timeline.

No, they (NVIDIA) simply removed the ability with G80 series onward with XP, and it's non-existant in Vista across the GeForce line. See the other thread dealing with Vista and fullscreen output for additional explanations.

Fullscreen display nowadays runs on an application level, with the operating system acting as the gateway. (HDCP handshaking for video output will essentially become a requirement as Graphics hardware and Windows development moves on)

Yeah! Mike, calm down. It's not the Quadro cards that are stupid or expensive.
Kenneally, what do you mean by "and remember that NVIDIA's fullscreen overlay mirroring is hamstrung in later driver releases"? Are you saying the latest drivers don't work with Edius?

    Ok Mike, calm down.. :)

But yes - Graphics Card output and NX output are two different things (colourspace).

Ultimately, it comes down to price, workflow and importance of accuracy. (and remember that NVIDIA's fullscreen overlay mirroring is hamstrung in later driver releases)

Any of the Quadro FX cards above FX1500 will be fine and half the price of the NX card and no delay. Quality (component) is as good as Edius can give. The beauty of the FX card is that it will work with software other than Edius. Most of the gamer cards (even with HD) lack two RAMDAC's

Your other option is to use a high end video card to get HD out. I personally do not like this method( I did this as well ). So, I would suggest the investment in the NX card to accomplish what you want.

If you're doing HDV there will be no video out, if you're doing DV then you can use OHCI out.

If you want realtime video out , you will have to get a hardware card (NX, SP). You can use OHCI if you go back through a deck or camera to a monitor but you will have a small lag time.
