Down Converting High Def Video

  • Down Converting High Def Video

    My question is this...do I have to down convert High Def video while capturing into Edius for use on a Standard DVD, or can I capture in High Def and down convert during the encoding when I am done editing?

    That way, if the client decides they want a High Def burn later on onto a Blu Ray DVD or something, I don't have to go back - capture and edit in High Def all over again.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Hi, this is what I do, I capture and edit in HDV, 1440 x 1080i, then I use procoder to make the nessecary files, sometimes PAL 16x9 sometimes letterboxed PAL 4x3.....
    A computer with a lot of stuff in it :)

        If you use programs like DVD lab Pro 2, to burn your dvd, then you can force a 4:3 TV to letterbox a widescreen video and not have to code it twice.

            Capture and edit in HDV into a HDV project. Encode output for SD ( it will be 16x9) and let authoring fix SD output to 4x3 to be letterboxed. You will need to keep a finished AVI in HDV if you want to go back and re author in HD to a Bluray disc. If you want to have the same menu structure etc then you could import the final edited video in HDV into Encore CS3 and let it produce both SD and HD discs( if you want to use Procoder instead of Mainconcepts encoder then import encoded files into Encore). They will be the same, you will only need to author once.But you will have to keep copies of both on the PC somewhere or you will need to re capture etc.
            Have I answered your question? Do it all in HDV then output to the format you want to use. I am using HDV but it of course could be AVCHD etc.
