If I have a video on the timeline, how can preview it in reverse (i.e. view in the opposite direction like traditionally rewind a VHS cassette while the view is on TV)?

Right-click on the clip and select "Speed" from the pop-up menu. Normal forward speed would be 100, so to watch it in reverse at normal speed, change it to -100. Any negative number will be in reverse, any positive number will be forward. This is also where you would go to make the video play back in slow motion. -
previewing is done with j k and L
reversing as effect - (minus) in front of the speed.Steve
