  • SD to HD upconversion

There have been numerous threads regarding HDV ot SD downconversion, but I'm curious about 16:9 SD to HD upconversion.

As we are headed into the DTV age in 2009, I'm thinking about shooting future SD projects in 16:9 or the so named "squeeze mode" so that the video can later be upconverted to HD. I have a mix of SD and HDV cameras at present and will shoot HDV on the ones that are capable of it.

As of now, the only experience I've had doing this is upconverting 320x240 files to 720x480 files using VirtualDub and a various assortment of filters within it which work reasonably well.

What are you using, and what do you recommend to upconvert to HDV from SD? Currently, I will be delivering content on standard def DVD, but AVCHD or blu-ray could be in the future shortly.

This is what I am doing and the results are reasonably good, unless told most people never pick it.
I am using 4x3 and cropping the top and bottom, BUT if you are shooting with a camera that is already native 16x9 the results will be much better as I am giving away a third of the pixels before I start

    SD to HDV CONVERSION
After the problem of the HDV to SD artifacts and the briliant solution from Mark Stuart from Aberdeen it set me going on my other holy grail, conversion from SD to HDV as I have too many to count SD tapes, most of which cannot be easily if ever reproduced, so
The quest started and this is the result and it is good
    1. Open VirtualDub
    2. Add resize filter
    3. Settings in this order
    4. Aspect Ratio "Disabled"
    5. New Size "1440 x 1080"
    6. Filter Mode "Lanczos3"
    7. Interlaced "Selected"
    8. Framing Options "Do not letterbox or crop"
    9. Codec Friendly "Do not adjust"
    10 click OK
    11 Select Cropping
    12 SET Y1 and Y2 to "70" sets 16x9
13 Select "Chroma Filter" Have not found any difference in any of the settings but it give a nice warm feeling
    14 set to "4:2:0"
15 Select "Start Frame Serving" from the menu
16 The Framerserver name is not important – leave as it is and click Start
17 Enter a filename such as framerserve.vdr (make sure you type in .vdr)
    18 Goto C:\Program Files\VFAPI and run VFAPIConvEN.exe
19 Add file – select the framerserve.vdr created above and click open
20 Change the output file location if you want, and click OK
    21 Click Convert
22 frameserve_vdr_vfapi.avi should be created in the directory specified.
    23 Launch Procoder
    24 Add video source frameserve_vdr_vfapi.avi
25 If interlacing defaults to Upper field first, change to Lower field first
26 Change the aspect ratio to 16:9 for widescreen
27 Add Target Preset – either CanopusHQ AVI 1440x1080 for editing or HDV for HDV to camera or one of the Blueray presets

Hope it helps some of you as well
    Regards Barry

The change in Procoder to "Lower Field First" for the "Input File" is because SD AVI IS bottom field first! so we are telling procoder the input IS "Bottom field" so it will transcode to "Upper Field First" for the HD video.
        Hope that makes sense

It does not work with EDIUS plus it requires Progressive video to work, took a long look at it with a friend with PPro CS3 BUT!
