Hmmm, talking about fans inside a casing, I have 4 fans ******* air away from the hard-disks area, 1 fan on top of each CPU, and 2 more fans ******* air OUT of the casing. I have a total of 8 SCSI and 5 ESata HDDs inside the casing !!!

Even after running the workstation for hours on end, temperature of the CPUs are only about 40 deg C on average.

I recently had the same cpu (AMD Phenom quad 9650) overheating issue. On exporting with Mpeg exporter my 4 cores ran continuously at 100% and CPU temperature rised up till switch off my PC. It was caused by a bad air circulation in the case. Solved by mounting in the rear a big fan throwing out hot air.

    My 2 cents

Richard, what is your CPU temperature like when you run EDIUS? Can you please post your complete h/w and s/w when you ask questions like that? Very hard to help you when you just tell us so briefly. Thank you.

Video card is only used for rendering those GPU qualified effects. I would assume that EDIUS uses the video card capabilities for both playing on timeline as well as for encoding. However, best to ask GV developers for that question.

I am not that sure about AMD processors - whether it is 100% compatible with Intel chips (especially those SSE instructions).

I'm still having problems with my computer shutting down when encoding. Sometimes disabling one core works but occasionally the problem happens then also.
I have installed a new power supply and a huge CPU cooling fan but to no avail.
The computer can run all day doing ordinary tasks ... it's only a problem when encoding or sometimes during HD capture.

I'm running a Dual Core AMD .... anyone else have any ideas?
Does the video card come into play when encoding from Edius 5?

Still BSOD and random at that

Google MemTest. Install, and run. I had two brand new memory chips, and had software problems. I ran MemTest and found one of the chips showed errors.

Also, try to reseat your CPU. It's rare, but this has solved problems for some people.

Check the fins on the CPU cooler for a build up of fluff and dirt, had something similar some time ago and now clean the cooler fins every 6 months and you would be amazed at how clogged they get
You will need a paint brush with stiff bristles and a vacuum cleaner with the nozle right next to the fan, or better still take the fan off if you feel capable and clean

Cleaned out my tower very well,Shot pressurized air everywhere I could. My Asus-mini (read gigantic cpu cooler) tower did have alot of dust, I almost bought into it causing an overheating problem so I ran PC probe to monitor my CPU temp and began the conversion process again. CPU running between 100-104 F during encode. Still BSOD and random at that. I am going to try to disable a core or two as mentioned above

I have also encountered this problem. The only solution so far that I have found is to go into task manager and disable 1 of the cores from the encoding process. (This assumes you are running a dual core system) This slows down the operation somewhat but the computer stays operational till the end of the encoding process.

The only WAY I know of to clean the CPU cooling fins REALLY sparking clean is -

    a) Remove the cooling fins from the motherboard - be very careful of this
    b) Soak the cooling fins in soapy water for 15 minutes
    c) If you have access to an ultrasound cleaner - put it in and turn it on (with water inside, of course) - 5 minutes
    d) Rinse off the soapy water and let it dry

You will be amazed how much junk you can clean it off this way.

I am having the same problem. My specs are listed below, I dont know if we can find some hardware similarities but anytime I try to convert from mpeg HDV to CanopusHQ I get the BSOD as well. I cant tell any other way i can replicate the issue because well I just got HD spark today. Not really a fun first start since I came to edius to get away from bugs but hopefully this is just a fluke thing that I am not going to have to deal with frequently.

There's no software means that I know of can cause the system to hard shut down like that. A standard fault would BSOD at worst.

Can you try running HeavyLoad from JAM Software for a while?

Some more experimenting reveals that when encoding the timeline to Canopus DV the PC does not switch off.
Trying to encode the resulting avi to wmv however, causes the switch off after 2 minutes or so....
