  • Canopus DV color type problem

    Hi everyone,
I have a little question. I exported a video from canopus in DV AVI format. I impoted it in After effects and exported from AE usin canopus DV using the "RGB has ITU-R BT .6014 range" option (that was in default).
When I got back in Edius, the luma/contrast changed :(
I discovered that I should put the "Convert RGB range [0,255] option in AE.

My problem is that I already made lots effects and I want to avoid to re-render them again.
So there is a way to converts all my final videos from ITU-R to RGB [0-255]?

    thank you,
    Sethy

    Good question Sethy,

I have the same issues exporting to .mov.

Don't use Canopus DV, use Microsoft DV (tick the MSDV box in the DV Exporter window). Export MSDV out of AE (Or Canopus HQ, preferred)

Why wouldnt you use the canopus DV codec?
Just curious as i am more and more into problems with color-types, in formats and displying a proper colour on my grading screen.
Am i missing something about the canopus codec?
Thought its using the full range and even better than the microsoft DV...!?

There also comes up adifferent question to me: if i run Edius via DVI to my callibratet monitor, is Edius adding any overlay or filter this way?
I cant really compare very wel right now, as my After Effects isnt updated yet and i use mostly mxf, but i got the feeling that Edius displays slighty different (more contrast..)
Not sure if anybody can give me a hint here...assuming that Edius displays the full range from 0-255 right?

Canopus DV codec's quality comes into play when you re-render the same footage a few times, but since in EDIUS we don't do that anymore, you don't have to use Canopus DV as it doesn't play nicely with all applications. I remember the color issue I had with AE and Canopus DV codec...so now if I capture DV I just use MSDV and work with that in EDIUS. Works fine. Matter of fact, I haven't used Canopus DV in over 2 years now.

If you need to render something out of After Effects, use Canopus HQ or Canopus Lossless...plus they are 4:2:2 codecs and you retain some color information that a DV codec would lose with it's 4:1:1 color space.

I use Canopus HQ. The MSDV is ok to me, I see no difference ( don't take that to mean anything too much), and for me renders quicker than HQ, but I still render HQ.

              Hi Peter,

If your source is DV in After Effects and you render out Canopus HQ you will not see any difference between that and the original...now, if you have alot of graphics (photoshop files etc) you will notice how the Canopus HQ clips look better than DV rendered files...the shades of gray look much better. Moving on to uncompressed 10bit (Which is what I render to if I want to have a master backup) all the shades in gradients will be kept...

Either way, SD Canopus HQ files are almost similar in size of DV files, and sometimes even smaller because it is a VBR codec unlike DV which is fixed at 25mbps.

                G'day Dave.
I don't use AE a lot. When I do it is usually 'art', not video, but I take your point. And yes I have seen some massive file size differences for the same job comp depending on your AE out settings. At times for no real useful gain.

                  All right...

Thanks for making that clear to me Stormdave...guess there is some footage i should recapture, as it is poor quality allready (1 chip DV-cam) and it has to be undercut with HVX-dvcpro50 Material...!

Did anybody find out if Edius gives me any kind of "overlay" or different color-scheme when displaying the footage..?

I mostly get a second of brightes display of the same footage when i change via "Tab" from the timeline window...anybody on this?
Is Edius displaying the full range of 0-255 or do i have to set anything here?

                  Thanks...

ok thanks for all your replies. I found out that exporting with canopus HQ or Losless is better....BUT
now what should I do with all my ITU-R clips already rendered? there is a way to fix them to bring them to the ORIGINAL state or I have to re-render ? (I hope noooo).

                    help!
