Best computer set up

I'm operating on a Pentium 4, 2ghz, 1gg RAM, using a Radeon X800 pro video card and the "Just Edit" capture card.

I'm looking at HD cameras, in particularly that Sony XDcam EX and generally upgrading everything.

I would like to know firstly if my set up is capable of handling the HD format and if not what are the specs that would make it do the job.

I'd love to just splash out and spend money on a completely new latest fastest baddest system but... well... I'm trying to get away with spending as little as possible. So what's the minimum I'd need to make this work?

Here's the problem, you can't have the best without spending a lot of money and you do need a new system, those specs wont do.

The specs you've got there look like the biz... Hmm... I'm trying to avoid heading off to the Mac shop but fear I'll upgrade my system and end up still finding it inadequate despite what the guys in the computer shop will tell me!

Single core P4, Ok for DV but for HDV I think it would be best to go Core 2 Duo.
Get an Edius approved Motherboard (details on the website) and a 7000series Nvidia graphics card with Windows XP and some decent Hard drives, pref RAID 0 for the video data, and you shouldn't be too far off.
And the NX boards are well worth it too, I know they can seem expensive but they do work really well.

Get a Q6600 processor (~ $200 USD now) a good Asus motherboard, 4GB of DDR2 PC6400 RAM and you're set for the most important parts.

Go for a Quad Core as you can pick them up cheap now, Asus Mother Board, WD Raptors in Raid 0 and a good Graphics card i.e 8800 ect, (I Prefer Quadro's 4500 to 5600) I would use Corsair Dominator ram as you can also pick up there DDR2 fairly cheap now, its a shame that Canopus is behind with 64bit systems as you are limited to a dying out operating system i.e XP Pro 32 bit. But if you are using Edius as a stand alone OHCI system go with 64bit Vista Ultimate, (I use this myself) never had a problem, you will be able to run more ram in the future like 8gig ect. I just use a Canopus ACEDVio card to capture with which works fine in Vista 64bit systems, and if I want to capture HD I do Via FireWire.

its a shame that Canopus is behind with 64bit systems as you are limited to a dying out operating system i.e XP Pro 32 bit.

as far as I know, Edius5 will be Vista 64 compliant but not XP64 bit compliant

looks like I may have to get to like Vista eventually, currently I don't like an OS that uses 500mb+ ram sitting idle, you won't be able to do much in Photoshop before system slowdown

Anton I run two systems with Vista 64bit one with 32gig ram and one with 8gig of ram, Even runnng Vista 64bit with 4gig of ram screams compared to XP 32bit, It is just a matter of setting it up correct in Vista and in the Bios, Since Microsoft has released SP1 for Vist it has made a big dif with file transfer speeds, driver support ect, Give it a go one day, I don't think you will be disapointed with it. Also Anton any news when version 5 will be released?

From the thread KH you are referring to, I believe he said it would work under Vista 64 bit but not natively and that the drivers for the hardware would also be available.

, It might be a good idea you produce an article or guide on how to setup up a system with vista 64 so the people who don't have the acumen to do it can take advantage of such a system, I'm sure there would be alot of people on the list that would greatly appreciate such a work.

Vista Setup

I have helped many a people with the set up of Vista 64bit and getting software to run on it, I have also mentioned in other post's on the forum about DEP in Vista 64bit, If anyone ever needs a hand people can contact me on 0754382678 in Australia, I know that this isn't alot of help for people overseas unless they want big phone bills (and if you want to ring from overseas please get the time correct for Brisbane Australia) but if anyone does have problems and can not phone email me at [email protected]bigpond.com and I will see what I can do for them, I have been involved on 64bit systems for almost 4yrs now so I will do my best for anyone.

I was not referring to a thread but was talking to someone from GV who says there will be no 64bit XP support or drivers

Hi Steve, I was referring to Vista 32bit, I am using Edius SP hardware and there are no drivers for 64bit, but apparently it will run under 32bit, once Edius5 is out, I will certainly like to try Vista 64bit with lots more than 4GB of Ram

Photoshop CS is the most Ram hungry software I ever seen, I am constantly running out when working with Poster size Raw images
