Need help on a DV question

For me with DVCAM, camera menu set to Data Code, you will get all the info you need in the clip properties of a captured clip using Edius with split at record timecode etc set in your capture preferences.

Gives you the time you stopped to go to the loo, and i think which one that was and where...........

my camera is set to regenerate TC mode, this allows me to maintain continuous TC and I always know how much time is left on tape

If I set to date/time mode, then things work as you say but things will become a mess and a guessing game to see how much time is left on tape

I will do some testing and see how batch recapture will work when TC info is time/date, if it works well, then I may leave it like that if I go to P2 HPX500

with DVCAM, I have no problems, scenes are automatically split during capture

You are saying you get no read in v/f or LCD of T/C run time on 'continuos' rec??
My only issue to solve this in my approach is

- never have t/c breaks on tape
- never revert to zero t/c for any tape rec run

So referring to cam feedback on tape t/c (red'd so far) works for me.

I am sure you know all this though, so am a little confused unless you aren't using my 'nevers' approach above.

but since I have never tried time/date mode, I am curious what happens if there are two 9:00am clips found on the tape, this is easily possible with corporate shoots which often take 3 days and only one 184min tape is used

will edius batch capture recognize the day stamp as well, if yes, then all will be well

Yes, as far as I am concerned. It will also tell, if on those different days at the same time, which of the loos you visited on corporate time at their expense.

For 2 cam shoots (or more) I do the very best I can to have the date and time as close to same as possible. This is a handy aid for sync, whether rec in sync or out of. You have a pretty close ref point in Edius if you need to analyse clips through the clip properties> video tab dailogue

Even free run is not totally reliable if you have that option from what I have been told so this is my workaround.

however, sometimes the location does not allow this, like the entertainment centre where there is too much distance from one cam to the other to gaffer a BNC cable to prevent people from tripping, and proper USA made gaffer tape is not cheap

I wonder if there is a wireless attachment for transmitting TC from BNC from one camera to another - then you don't to run cables like this.

Guys, we use the DVC200 here (Basically a DVCPRO body without DVCPRO...1/2" CCD's)...and everytime we record something, the date and time changes.

This allows EDIUS to capture via time/date, instead of time code breaks (if I choose timecode break, and I recapture the footage, it never splits).

Now, something might be wrong with the DSR25, but my DSR11 works perfectly if I do this.

As for having 9:00 am twice, no worries, if the date changes, your 9am will jump to the next day and after the prior.

How I did this test was:

1) Capture footage with time/date and timecode (it was set to 00:00:00:00 initially, not free run)
2) Drop 2 minutes worth of clips on the EDIUS timeline (about 5 shots).
3) Enable "Use track timecode" in the playback settings under Settings >> Application Settings
4) Made sure my VTR was using external timecode instead of internal.
5) I used OHCI mode to test. DVStorm PC was giving me problems, so I switched over to the NX system and used an OHCI to do all of this. I have not tried through the NX DV port yet.

I did this a few times and it works precisely every time...I just wanted to make sure that it worked so I did it a few times.

If I get DVCPRO footage, I am going to shoot it the same way we're shooting these DV tapes...It should work exactly the same way.

Dave I thought one of these 2 DSR units was more featured T/c wise than the other. Going on memory.

That may be the problem why one is working and not the other

yeah, the DSR25 is a bit more "professional" with the meters and such...but they should work identically with the external TC option.

Something has to be wrong here if mine works and Anton's doesn't.

I have not tried the OHCI way yet, I prefer to see what I do on my 42" Plasma, so I prefer the SP card way, which is very similar to NX

btw, the HPX-500 has SD SDI and HD SDI output

this means that after editing, you can export back to P2 cards, run over to your broadcast dubbing shop and plug the SDI into a HDCAM deck for HD broadcast dubs

no need to buy Edius HD turnkey

I thought about that too the other day. You can also feed off directly from the camera imagers via HD-SDI if you ever are in a studio environment.

We do the same but on conferences etc I do find it easier to use Free Run and the REAL time from the date/time gen. Never a problem capturing (except for Batch Capture very close to a new TC.)

Incidentally we if we are not cabled and invariably we are not we re-lock timecode after a few hours- say lunchtime etc. It doesn't matter if you have a few frames drift as it is easy to sort from the audio waveform.

I only ever use MY gaffer tape as a last resort <GRIN>- the sound and lighting guys always have loads and in lovely colours..........
