Need help on a DV question

This is specifically an EDIUS question:

If I drop in let's say 200 clips on the timeline, is there a way to dump back to a DVCAM (or DV) tape and keep the timestamp information? So if I capture the DV/DVCAM tape again, can I use the DV timestamp feature to have EDIUS (or Scenalyzer) cut up the clips in pieces again as it does with the original shot DV tapes?

setting output timecode to source TC should do the trick, but I have not tried it, maybe you can do a short test, I am currently in the middle of an edit so I can't test

Thank you Anton, I will give it a try once I'm near my edit station. If this works, we're going with an HPX500 and shooting on 16:9 DVCPRO for now (HD is rare for my customers, unless we do docu's). We will be dumping back to fresh DV tapes by just connecting the 64GB (what I plan to get when it comes out) P2 card to the edit station via USB2 and just play it back out of EDIUS and into DVCAM for storage...then format the P2 card for the next job. We loved the camera after checking it out again at NAB, and of course loved the price drop as well :)

We use it often.
But our source is dvcam not dvcpro.

Yeah the HPX does not shoot DV or else I would use that, but since we have EDIUS Broadcast, we can just dump the P2 clips right off the chip and spit back to DVCAM for archiving purposes.

Since you're saying it works, I am now 100% set on getting at least one of this cams for now. Thanks!!!
In the future we'll add 3 more 64bgb chips for DVCPROHD shoots.

I just tried it and the TC was correctly transferred to tape (I had to switch tape deck (dsr25) to except external TC in menu)

Note: DV recording does not accept external TC, you need to record in DVCAM mode

Note2: Scene splitting does not work upon recapture

Steve, I have a DSR11 so I can use DVCAM mode if needed...just wanted to stick with DV mode since I can put in 276 mins of video per DVCAM 184 tape.

if you set the DSR11 TC to internal, it will start recording at TC 0:00:00:00

if you set DSR TC to external, it will sync with the code of the source clips on your timeline

external TC mode is greyed out when in DV rec mode

wrong, the clips will capture as a single clip, I already tested because I am also interested in the HPX500

Possibly a case of splitting the metadata component.
1 original tc metadata (laid back)
2 new metadata (continuous record so no flags for splits)

Just wondering - where did you get your 64GB P2 cards from? Panny says it should only be out end of this year. Just eyeing that one - then I don't need to carry my 60GB hard-disks to backup the 16GB P2 cards anymore.

If you are capturing P2 data - why not capture it into COMPUTER grade tape media (instead of going to DVCAM)? You loose all the metadata this way. Just get a VX tape drive or something "cheap" ... then you preserve the individual P2 files as well. If you use a faster tape drive (like SDLT or LTO) - you can capture at 10X to 20X realtime as well.

Reasons why I want to backup to DVCAM tapes:

1) They're cheap
2) We're used to it
3) It's good for archiving
4) They are reusable

Now if this was DVCPROHD footage, obviously I would have to backup to hard drives etc and the metadata would be kept as well.

Seems that I will lose the TC capability here, I will be experimenting today.

Sorry - I jumped the gun here :-). Didn't read the part in brackets ...

Okay - you have a point then ... if you don't care about metadata, yes - DVCAM will work as well.

I have a DSR25 here - I can't see any switches to set TC to internal or external. Haven't really paid attention to this aspect at all. All I know is the machine generates its own TC regardless of what I specify on EDIUS.

I do know I can force the recorder to record either normal DV or DVCAM mode.
