  • back to 4.54

I've been busy cutting a peice incorporating EX1 and Z1 footage, quite a lot of effects, AE - on my system which is running 4.6.

I've run into slowdown problems which are restored to normal by closing Edius and restarting. The symptoms are, slow responses to selection of anything, a refusal to stop playing the time line for 10 seconds or so, and a generaly "lazy" interface. The project does not contain vast amounts of clips, so its not on overload, as I say, this is all instantly corrected by a quick restart.

RAM is reported as around 1.3gb available even under stress, I've used the 8800 nvidia card (same issues ) an FX1700 card (same issues) and even my old 6600 (same issues) so it's not video card related.

If I revert to Edius 4.54, all works perfectly, so it's a 4.6 problem.

Did I read some where that there is an issue with the PCI X version of the NX card and 4.6 ??

Maybe narrowed this down a bit, the interface appears to "stall" as the buffer is being prefilled for playback, then restart Edius and all is well again, but changing the project settings causes it to go slow again. This is all true with NX or OHCI output.

I have a Supermicro X6DAE-G2 motherboard with PCI-X NX card.

This is not the end of the world, although as an EX1 owner, the easy import of footage from this camera in 4.6 is great, but I can live without it for now, but I wonder if this is a known issue, it is making editing a bit of a soupy drag, so much so that I'm about to reinstall the whole darn thing back to 4.54.

    Thanks

    Paul

I have a Supermicro X5DA8 motherboard with PCI-X SP card and 0.000% performance problems using 4.6

what is your buffer setting for NX and OHCI, I use 128 for both, using more drains the system memory too much for no real need

      Hey Anton,

I've tried from the lowest settings possible to my usual which is the highest - when running HD (160) but too high for SD (560) so I reduce when working on SD projects.

I just opened a project, it played fine, then changed the settings from HDV to SD and it went choppy, restart OK again, change project, choppy again.

      very odd

I'm like you, keep it clean and tidy - also, all this only happens in 4.6.

            I use Raid0 for video with 4 x 146GB 15k SCSI

my C drive is 15k 36GB Seagate SCSI achieving almost 100mb/sec

I have Rocket raid card with 4x 300gb internal, but never had a problem up to now, I installed 4.6 when it was first available, opened an old project and experienced this problem, then created a new project which appeared fine.

I re installed 4.54 to work on the old project and started again with 4.6 recently, with new clean projects, but have encountered the same issues.

On my hairy fast laptop, no problems, but no NX of course so,I'm gonna do a clean out and a fresh install, wasn't there a Canopus app to remove all related Canopus system files somewhere? as well as the windows cleaner thingy?

I'd love to have 4.6 run smoothly on my system as it's so good with the EX1.

In fact, all the problems I hear are for EDIUS 4.6 with NX (PCI-e) version. The PCI-X (64 bits PCI) with 4.6 screams - 0.000000% performance problem on my workstation.

Folks have complained about how slow EDIUS takes to come back after losing its focus - but, I tested it on my workstation - the slowest I have seen is 10 seconds (with 128 open clips - the maximum my secondary monitor can display).

So I installed 4.61 and I still have the same problems - so its back to 4.54 for me.

                      Just a little more detail:

Open new project (DVCpro HD 50i) add 2 clips to timeline, change project to SD 50i and I get this situation where the timeline will not stop playing until the buffer is full, nor will the interface respond in any way until it is filled. This is true with the NX engaged or with OHCI.

Toggle the video overlay setting, and it all works again, each time I change format, the same behaviour, which can be reset by this action.

I guess by the huge response, I'm alone with this problem.

4.54 back on and all plays fab - I wonder what changed from 4.54 to 4.6 that has affected my system so badly?

Thanks for the support Rusty, I'm now working with 4.54 and it's such a joy, fast and furious, very reponsive, I'm just concerned in the long term, as maybe this is just how Edius will stay, although plenty of people say it goes like a rocket,

Is it worth doing a complete system rebuild from the ground up? it'll take so long, and probably be no different in the end. My laptop runs 4.6 just fine - I just don't get it at all - sure it's graphics or NX related.

Now I'm really miffed, I just opened my Storm 2 system to do a little tweak, and with 4.6 on board the lousy rotten cursor is sticky and won't budge until the stupid buffer is full, this is too crap for words, at this rate I'll be using Avid or FCP - oh GOD I might have to buy a MAC!

By the way, this was tested using a DV 4x3 project - I mean, if it won't handle that, it's going in the bin.

Paul, it's the dryness you get on that sun drenched island, it's dried up all the lubrication in your computers. You need our pesky British rain to lubricate the works.

Still on Edius 4,54 here and not budging, no way, not yet.. too many problems when there's an update, one step forwards and one back.
