  • About Codec Canopus HQ

    Hello EdiUsers,

I am digitilizing many videos and films since Covid.... From Edius 5.51 with Canopus HQ codec.

Some people are editing themselves.... so they are interested by receiving the genuine files (in place of MP4-H264 wich is compressed).
... and in this case I have not to export in another format.

So I can provide the last Codec Pack I have download in 2020: GV_CodecOption_Setup-8.5.0.1927

    Info-W7-W8-W10.jpg

    Questions :

    1) Will it work and is this the best solution ?
    2) I saw that the "actually" Codec Pack available on Grass Valley site is HQX only... will it work with HQ.
    3) Do you recommand to download another (more recent) Codec pack and give the link to download.

    Any advice is welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you know what NLE they are using ? Vegas as well as Resolve ( Windows or Mac ) will edit with Grass Valley codec's even export too.

I thought I would do some more checking to see if I gave you good information. I can read a HQ/HQX file on the Studio Max that was created on the PC for instance. But iMovie will not read them but Resolve will. Also I think Vegas may need the codec pack as it works on two of my PC's that have EDIUS installed but does not work on a third that does not have EDIUS and never has had it loaded. So you may need to give the codec pack info or get them to use Resolve.

Thanks both of you for your respons.

Sorry for my poor English (not my mother language). So here are some complementary details.

The problem is to give the captured files (AVI Canopus HQ) as they have been created by the NX express card.

So, I suppose that installing the "Codec pack Set-Up" will be enough to read the files (decoding during reading) with a common Player for Windows.

The second step "editing" is depending of each client installation... and I don't want to go this step.

            Thanks in advance for advice...

The issue with the codec pack is that it is a quicktime plugin. If the system does not have quicktime installed the plugin pack will not work.

It is much better to export or transcode into a codec that can be edited without the need of codec packs, such as prores.

Thanks Bern. Very clear explanation....and important.

I don't want to go via another Codec ... it's more times for the jobb.... for the same prices

Well I can add the "QuicktimeInstaller"... I have several until de Version-7.7.9.

                Is it acceptable ?

                Thanks in advance

Just to be clear, are you using Edius 5.51 or Edius 9 to do the digitizing?

Prores is the safe bet.....provided the NLE being used accepts Prores files.
If they all do, your set to go. If not, then you may have to create multiple file types.
That's when it will get messy.

                  I do know:
                  1. Resolve 18 will accept HQX/HQ .avi and .mov along with Prores and MXF direct export from Edius X.
P2 MXF and XAVC MXF are not supported.

                  2. Premiere Pro 2023 will accept Prores, but HQX/HQ is unsupported.
However, P2 MX, XAVC MXF, and direct MXF export out of Edius X is supported.

                  3. DNxHR is possible if they have the Avid codecs installed.

                  4. Then you have all of the other NLE's that have specific requirements.
These results were on a system with Edius X installed.

                  Good luck on this.

I would not even attempt doing that. You may be able to give a quicktime installer and the codec pack, but with the quicktime security flaw that was discovered at the end of the quicktime 7 era, which also forced most NLE's to abandon quicktime and start to develop native support for an mov file, some NLE's may not even be able to use the old quicktime codecs, and even if they can, people may not want to install it due to the security flaw or perhaps may not be allowed to install it, even though the flaw was only about using quicktime to stream video from the internet.

Making the files as native prores mov is by far the safest solution, and will likely be less headach for you in the long run when people start calling because the quicktimg/codec pack solution doesn't work or won't install.

This does not really have to mean more of your time though. Once your captures are done, set up a big batch encode using xmedia recode, as it can write prores, or something else that you may have that can do it and just let it run over night.

                      Thank you Bern and Jerry,

I am capturing since year with Edius 5.... on Windows XP (to benefit of the driver that give control to DV player and Camera's from the computer).

                      These installation is rock solid...

From the Canopus HQ files, I then edit on Edius 8 & 9 and provide MP4 (H264) on USB key.

For editors I could jump the second step to give them "genuine file Canopus HQ". But after reading all your answers, the installation of Codec pack and quicktime seems not reliable...
... because I don't know wich system the client use and if it will be operational...

So I conclude, base on yours experts advice, that Prores is the unavoidable solution. Exporting may be done with batch included in Edius. I have to maintain the price and no spare is recommanded for these case.

Thanks for your time and have a nice weekend.

I totally agree with Bern and Jerry on the best workflow for the OP. But I just want to add an FYI for anyone needing to install QuickTime 7.79 for Windows for whatever reason. I've commented on this security flaw several times in the past so I won't rehash that. There is no need to do a full install of QT to gain the codec. Only installing QuickTime Essentials will get you the codec without having to worry about any "flaw".

Just a very big thanks to all who participate on my post.

A last conclusion thanks Anton's answer : Exportation in Prores is to do from 9 (or X). By chance 8 & 9 are compatible so editing from 8 can be exported in 9 without any change.

Have a nice Sunday for this first summer day.
