Hi Guys,
Just thought I would let everyone know that there is an update out for the Alladin Dongles if you are using 64bit Vista, This update said it was for the drivers for the dongles, Windows update installed them.
Please note that as far as I know it is for 64bit Vista.

Yes, but there is no drivers for 64/32bit Vista yet for the EDIUS Hardware (NX/SP), so unless you just want to use EDIUS in OHCI mode, you shouldn't need to use Vista at the moment.

As I said the drivers are for the Alladin Dongles ONLY, And yes I just use Edius in OHCI mode, There is no way in the world I would go back to XP Especially 32bit, not after using Vista 64bit for over 1yr, I have found in the past alot of folks don't have any idea on 64bit machines and should stay with 32bit machines until they learn more about computers!

A little OT but what does Vista (AFA editing goes) have that makes you not want to go back to XP? Or is that more of a 32 bit vs 64 bit observation?

it is a 64bit thing, Ram, performance ect all come into play, I don't just do editing on the machine, it is used for software development ect, I have never had a problem with any 64bit operating system, not like some people, I have read about people having problems with vista 64bit (can't get programs to run ect) but have later found that they do not even know about DEP ect in vista 64bit, This is the kind of thing that I was getting at, I still stick by my words and will say that people should not use these systems if they do not have a decent understanding of computers (i.e software ect) I work on computers all day 7 days aweek sometimes, servers, private systems ect ect, and find the knowledge that people know about 64bit systems is very limited when it comes to the setup of them and the fine tuning of them.
Anyway Dave if I can ever help you or you need advice on a 64bit system i.e XP 64bit, Vista 64bit, Server 64bit just let me know and I will see what I can do, Take care.

Xp 64

Sounds like I need to get more encouragement from you. . . I bought XP64 3 years ago and wanted to set up an NX system. Intel never published drivers for the onboard RAID, Canopus never published drivers for their hardware, etc. Now I've got an OHCI machine and would love to get that running on XP64. I'll list the components and you let me know what things might give me problems.

Asus P5W DH Deluxe, Core 2 Duo E6600, 2 gigs Kingston, 3 500 gig WD server class SATA hard drives, NVIDIA Quadro FX1500, IDE DVD burner, SATA DVD burner. I have eSATA drives connected at times. Many posts on this forum, and others, have kept me from trying 64 bit again. I'm having to reinstall Windows on this system right now anyway.

Any advice would be great.

Hi Bill,
I can't see how you would have any problems with that gear that you have, As I said earlier I am using a OHCI Edius system with a Canopus ACEDVio Capture card on Vista 64bit and all is good, I must admit that I haven't used XP 64bit for a while now but when I did I never had any problems with drivers at all. just a bit of searching for them in google, but now days 99% are availible from microsoft through device manager, Why don't you get your self a copy of Vista 64bit (OEM version if possible as is cheaper) and run Vista, just remember if you do have problems with some older programs not opening after you install them, just add the EXE file to Data Execution Prevention which is found by right clicking on computer and selecting Properties - Advanced system settings - Advanced - then settings,
You will then see DEP, I will say that not many if any programs under Vista^64 bit need to be added to this, Edius has been running fine for me for months now and has never crashed, I can even run TitleMotion Pro and have never had it crash, Anyway I will leave the ball in your court and wish you all the best. Sorry also intel do the 64bit drivers now as Nvidia and most companies for XP64bit.

XP64 vs Vista64

I own a copy of XP64 that's just collecting dust. We read that Vista has lots of baggage/overhead. Looks like Ultimate will cost me $180. What do I gain?

Memories

Last (ha, ha) question. Memory has gotten cheaper. Should I put another 2 gigs in the machine since Vista can use more than XP? Will Edius or Sony Vegas benefit?

Hi Bill,
I run 8gig 4x2gig sticks in vista 64bit, I would use aleast 4gig in any 64bit operating system, DDR2 Ram is dirt cheap at the moment so why not grab a couple of extra gig, Depending on your bios though you might have to enable memory remapping which you can do a search for on Google and they will explain more about this, it allows Windows to see and use the full 4gig,
Asus boards have this feature..

Bill also on Vista 64bit compared to XP64 bit, I find the dif is that Vista 64 is rock solid in stability, Plus now that Microsoft has released SP1 for Vista this has made a lot of improvements, Do your self a favour and get Vista 64bit, I also have a copy of XP 64bit here if anybody wants it cheap. SP1 in Vista has added alot more hardware support, better drivers, faster file transfers, ect ect. One last thing Bill if you have problems finding your raid drivers go here and look http://www.siliconimage.com/support/...s=1&sataraid=0 you will find them here just make sure you pick the correct ones for your system , and type of raid that you are planning to run.
