  • Edius 9.52 hates my iPhone videos

I've been trying to lighten my load by switching from Lumix cameras to iPhones. Things were working fine as of Aug 18, but by August 30 I hit a snag. I shot a clip using Filmic Pro with an XS Max and an 11 Pro Max and the Apple camera app in an iPhone 13. The two Filmic Pro clips worked fine but the clip from the iPhone 13 completely dogged down my edit. I tried making a proxy, got the same result. I finally rendered the clip overnight and used the output successfully.

Now I'm experiencing the same unusable performance with clips from the XS and the i11 shot with Filmic Pro. I've shot using Filmic's Extreme, Standard, and Apple quality levels with no success. These clips play fine in VLC but in Edius I'm getting a couple of frames per second playback.

I'm shooting 4K 30 and using a 720p project so I can zoom and pan in post.

Any ideas where to look to resolve this?

What is the codec used in those clips? If it's H265 (aka HEVC), which I suspect it is, you are better off transcodiing them to something easier to edit with, such as ProRes or HQX. You can use something like Xmedia Recode to do the transcode, or possibly even a transcode in the bin in Edius if it is reading the files, but using something external to edius may be faster.

H265 based codecs are extremely hard to use in an edit in Edius 9. Apple's flavour of the codec is even a bit worse because it has deviated a bit from the standard generic spec. Edius x may fare better, with the right hardware to allow for GPU decode acceleration, but I don't run Edius X so I don't know for sure.

Ding Ding Ding!! We have a winner! How in the blip do you figure out all these nooks and crannies, sir? I switched off optical flow and things are rolling. One more heartfelt thanks from an Anton savee.

Thanks Bern, the codec is HEVC indeed. When I first hit this problem I tried several different tools to transcode the clip and none of them gave me something I could edit until I rendered the clip out in Edius. I just realized that the first problem clip was one that used for some slo-mo and I think that's where I turned on optical flow to smooth out the result.

You didn't list your hardware so I'm going to guess it's an older system.
I'm running an overclocked 4790k, ancient hardware without HEVC decode, and I work with UHD 30p files
for export out to UHD 30p and HD 30P.
These files come to me in both HEVC and H.264. I don't think twice about transcoding them into either
HQX or Prores HQ. Of these 2, only Prores shows in Media Info as 4:2:2. Both work fine....
...although I've been using Prores HQ more and more.
My delivery is by way of thumb drive for smart tv's. Both, the UHD and HD products are created from the same
UHD Prores Master. The UHD HEVC encode is by way of Mastering Works 7 and the HD encode is a downrez from
            Edius X.

If you aren't running the latest version of Edius 9 (you can get it here: https://community.grassvalley.com/gv...e/s?sid=9unhs1 )
there is a drop down on the Edius header which will allow you to reduce resolution thus making playback easier.
I normally run mine at 1/2 and that roughly equates to working with 1080p files.
This coupled with transcoding the original files, should increase your playback performance.

I'm curious as to why you are delivering in 720 30P. You still have quite a bit of zoom and pan
            capabilities with 2160 30p down to 1080 30p.

I use 720p for my delivery to YouTube because I often do dramatic zooms to highlight some guitar move or other.

Yes, I guess my system is getting a bit old, I'm a cheapskate I'm afraid.

I did splurge out for Edius Workgroup so I could get the adjustable playback resolution.

Thanks for taking time to offer suggestions.
