  • Reloading Windows - How to Best Handle My License?

    Hello,

I apologize for not being secure with this scenario by now, but I have had to call GV support and beg for an extra activation twice over the years and do not want to repeat the mistake. I will be refreshing my laptop back to factory and would like to to know how I should handle the Edius X installation license. Do I deactivate before I perform the refresh? Please let me know the best way to handle a Windows reinstall or point me to the info as I could not zero in on it through a forum search. As far as I know, I am out of installations. Thanks for your help.

    My preferred method is:
    1. Back everything up on the C drive.
    2. Download the latest Windows installer from Microsoft and make a bootable USB pen using rufus.
    3. Deactivate EDIUS and any other programs on the computer.
    4. Unplug all drives except video drives - you probably don't have to do this but I do just in case.
    5. Boot from the USB drive and reformat the main windows drive before installing
    6. Install windows, then the drives for the motherboard normally downloaded from the motherboard manufacturers website.
    7. Install everything else.
This gives me the cleanest re-install but takes more effort than just doing a "refresh".

Before doing anything major on the PC I would deactivate EDIUS. Just remember you can only deactivate it twice in one month.

Thank you David! My main concern is Edius and saving my ability to install it etc... So as long as I deactivate before wiping anything, I will be able to reinstall without counting against my overall installation count?

        that is correct

also, you don't need rufus for making a bootable USB as Microsoft have a tool as part of downloading windows that does it all for you
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/soft...load/windows10 (click the download tool button and this will do it all for you)

Thanks again. My laptop has a return to factory default reinstall that I activate through the recovery module. So that should be covered.

ouch, you will be spending a day performing updates after that

downloading the tool and installing will take you right away to the latest version

you can even choose to keep files and programs, so there would be no need to reinstall EDIUS etc

Well I am trying to discover if there is an issue with the USB 3.0 ports. I have a new capture card that is not functioning properly on the laptop but is functioning properly on my desktop. It is a Roland HDMI capture card over HDMI. So I want to bring the laptop back to factory just to see if that solves the issue. since laptops often have proprietary drives & programs, I think it is best to use the recovery partition this time. If the USB capture is still not working after the refresh well, then I will know that it might need to go in for service.
