  • Swapping between 25p & 50p in editing

I've filmed an event in 50P and started editing in 50p but want to output the final clip for the client in 25p.

Will it or is it possible to change from 50 to 25p mid edit? I realize I can output a high res 50p and then place that in a 25p timeline and reclip but its an extra process.

I prefer filming in 50p, personally I find it easier to gauge focus, however some clips just look better in 25p

    Q. Is there any loss in quality from filming in 50p and then editing that footage in 25p or is it minimal or none?

    Thanks

    Martin.

we expected switching of frame rates in EDIUS 10 but it did not happen, so your idea is good to go

    maybe in EDIUS 20

Not being able to switch framerates is not only an Edius shortcoming. Softwares like Edius and Media composer currently enforce the framerate as a project setting that can't be changed after it is set. The software I used to edit in before Edius (Pinnacle/Avid Liquid) used to set the framerate based on the timeline, not the project, so you could have different framerate timelines in the same project. It also didn't restrict you from changing the framerate once it was set.

Either as a changeable project setting or as a changeable timeline setting as Liquid used to do would be a great feature for sure and it has been requested before.

I totally agree. It would be great to be able to apply a chosen framerate to a timeline. I would use this feature regularly.

I have not tired this but maybe check if you can export the project with all clips etc (as 50p) as an AAF, and import the AAF into a 25p project.

What happens if you export in 25p from the 50p project by using the conversion feature in the exporter?

AAF in Edius does not allow for unmatched or mixed framerates

Resolve allows you to create different framerate timelines within the same project where you can copy finished edits between these timelines and export at different framerates if needed. It's all in the details, they should consider hiring a actual editor to advise the team that is programming the software. :)

                          1. Unzip .ezp
                          2. Open .ews with hex editor (I use HxD)
                          3. Find the first occurance of "FrameRate"
                          (in hex values): 46 72 61 6D 65 52 61 74 65 8E 80 80 80 00 78 03 6E 75 6D 01 19

The last 19 (25 decimal) is the project framerate. Simply change it to 32 (50 decimal)

                          or replace
                          25p
                          46 72 61 6D 65 52 61 74 65 8E 80 80 80 00 78 03 6E 75 6D 01 19

                          50p
                          46 72 61 6D 65 52 61 74 65 8E 80 80 80 00 78 03 6E 75 6D 01 32

                          5. Save

                          6. Zip all together and rename .zip to .ezp

                          7. Open in Edius. All clips plays at double speed,
You can fix that, by dragging the end of the clip (shortening) and extend back.

Very interestung Dannyvdstudio. I tried it and my project did change to 50P but it was in quite a mess. I could get clips to play at the right speed by dragging the ends out and back but nested sequences seemed to be a complete mess.
