Edius X Proxy file format not helpful - follows original codec

UHD 50p project Edius X 10.30.8291, system 4 Xeon based

When I have iPhone 12 H265 50p material without Intel QS won't play and as the resolution drop down doesn't help playback get any better, (software not finding a valid decoder) so I thought I should make a proxy file.

Edius makes an mp4.mov AVC 960x540 file (yes it has dropped the HEVC) but it still won't play in the project over half resolution, again no Quick Sync hardware acceleration.

So if I make a Proxy file of an .MXF clip I get an .MXF proxy, that's OK because both the original files and the proxy play in full res anyway.

This means that the proxy files do not help playback at all with difficult codecs for my system as the proxy process does not transcode it simply makes a lower resolution file of the original file container/format/codec.

The only option left is to convert file which is twice real time, and is only any use if the edit has not yet begun.

I need to be able to choose the proxy render format codec for H265 and H264 original files in system settings otherwise proxy files do not help play footage with a difficult codec to decode.

I would like the proxies to be HQX.mov format for example (easier to decode in multi layer than MXF format).

I don't have X to compare to, but that doesn't seem right at all. Proxies in Edius 9 are an mpeg2 codec regardless of the source codec.

Not in Edius X as I did a Media Info on the Proxy files if you have an MP4 that's what the proxy is made in, if its an MXF file you get an MXF proxy.

Also both Edius 9 and Edius X automatically change the playback resolution to 1/2 when entering proxy mode, but surely the idea of Proxy mode is that especially if the timeline has a mixture of Proxy and non Proxy clips that it can play the timeline in full resolution?

If I delete the Proxy files in the footage folder and re-open Edius 9 it still thinks there is already a Proxy file for some files, and won't let me make another in the Bin, but others it let's me make a new proxy for.

I can't therefore see why some files won't let me make a new proxy unless there is something else that needs deleting.

When I do that in Edius 9 you are correct BernH it makes an MP2 proxy but as an OP1a MXF. It plays fine in half but not full resolution so another format would be better for me such as HQX.movie. It is however consistent in Edius 9 you always get the MP2 file whatever the source file is.

Also in the latest Edius 9 the settings UI hides behind other windows it should be on top.

So Edius X and Edius 9 are very different as to what proxy files they make but neither are helpful to me.

I would also have thought HQX as an option for proxy would have been nice, since it is the native GV codec, but I can understand why mpeg2 was used in Edius 9. It is a mature, easy to edit codec. Still would have been nice to have the option though. Your machine should be able to play back those Edius 9 mpeg2 proxies at full resolution without a problem, since mpeg2 is cpu bound and you have plenty of cpu. If Edius x is not converting to a cpu bound codec for proxies, then you may have an issue without quicksync.

I haven't used proxy much, but I do know that deleting them does not re-enable the option to create them, so I do find that to be a problem also.

Since you are looking for something better than the proxy mode built in, I'd suggest that you do a convert in the bin to HQX and then edit with those files. I know it's an extra step and time converting, but I also know from experience, that it is not bad if you can let it chew on making the HQX files over night.

It was a problem as the video files (another post) were upside down and layouter had to turn all those pixels (UHD) 180 degrees. With the video the right way up it doesn't load the system.
