  • Playng HEVC UHD and Proxy Mode Edius X

    Hello

    An issue and a suggestion.

I have some iPhone UHD 50p HEVC footage. As my PC is Xeon based I don't have Intel Quick-sync to help playback. Indeed the footage won't playback.

The resolution drop down doesn't help, it doesn't do anything in this instance.

I don't know whether that can be looked at for MP4/H265 files in this configuration of PC by GV? (Would help quite a few AMD CPU users too)

    That's another issue - I digress.

So my choice is that I either render those clips out to HQX or use Proxy Mode.

However I want to mix those clips in with other material that will play OK, so what I wanted to do was to only have a group of clips in the Bin or a bin folder's worth of clips in Proxy Mode. I would be quite happy to have a Bin folder with only that footage in to be able to do that.

Making the whole time line Proxy Mode when most of the clips play OK in my mind spoils the experience, wastes rendering time and disc space unnecessarily.

Is there any merit in this idea of being able to apply Proxy Mode to all the clips of a difficult to play type in a Bin folder (add a Bin button to do this) rather than having Proxy Mode globally applied to the whole project?

This idea could be extended to a right click on a clip on the timeline that had say difficult to play plugin filters added. An on/off toggle or box tick would be needed.

There would need to be a clear all proxies button in the sequence settings.

Somebody might have a better idea, but there it is, any good?

    Regards

    Mike

Turn off automatically generate proxies in the settings and then choose the ones you want to make proxies of in the bin, right click and make proxies. EDIUS should use the original clips in proxy mode if there are no proxies.

All agent files can be deleted using batch processing

The code is as follows(Extended name ,Please change txt to bat; A is the drive letter where the file is located):
      echo off
      SET CHECK=
      del /f /s /q A:\*.ese
      del /f /s /q A:\*.ewc2
      del /f /s /q A:\*.proxy
      del /f /s /q A:\*.proxy.mov

For a small part he did, adding that code to a command prompt file and assigning the right drive letter will delete all files Edius creates, seek info (.ese) and waveform cache files (.ewc2) could be taken out and just leave the proxy and proxy.mov references in to get rif of all proxy files. Personally I'd rather just use the search bar in explorer and add *.proxy or *.proxy.mov if I want to delete from specific folders.

I had the same issue with a uhd 50p 10bit Fuji Film file, played fine in mediaplayer but not at all in Edius, lowering preview resolution didn't help, so this clearly is a Edius issue not being able to play back the file. In those rare cases I have to deal with such files I convert them to HQX, I would not expect GV to do anything about that now for users who can't use Quicksync, we have to wait untill they are able to give use GPU accelerated playback which may come in version 11 or maybe never :) So currently proxy's or converting to HQX are your only options.

          Thanks David,

I rarely use Proxies, so hence not familiar with all the settings. I made the change as you suggested in the user settings, however Edius has already made Proxies of the footage that I don't need to have Proxies for, and there is no button to delete the proxies in the Bin, excepting going to the source folder and deleting them manually, which I did.

In Proxy mode clips without a Proxy file have hatched lines to indicate that is so.

I am not sure why but in UHD 50p I can generally only play HEVC Proxies at 8Bit resolution and XAVCI proxy at half resolution but that was using HQX MXF as the render format.

In fact the XAVCI clip was on a green screen, and as the Chroma Key filter takes a whopping 30% of the CPU I was interested in whether a Proxy clip would help. It would play in normal mode OK in half resolution anyway. There is no advantage creating a Proxy for that clip as I have to play the Proxy at half resolution anyway.

Hmm...There shouldn't be any issue with playing back the Proxy files as they are only 960 by 540 at a low bit rate.

With the rendering format set to HQX in the settings, the Proxy playback in full res takes 50% of the CPU, but as it's an SLOG3 clip so it needs the Primary Colour Corrector added to convert the colour space, that takes us up to 70% CPU and as there is no detail enhancement in SLOG 3 mode in the camera so I use the Matrix Sharpen that takes us up to 78% but that plays in full resolution.

The HEVC HLG footage Proxy with HQX.mov render format just about plays in full res real time. The CPU is not working very hard producing the Proxy, only running at 20% so it takes a long time whereas with the XAVCI Proxy generation it works hard.

HQX.mov render format is also OK, so its HQX.MXF to avoid for 50p Proxies.

Unfortunately when I switch on the PCC GPU acceleration although the GPU core is then showing 43% load, playback stops being real time so I can't have that on. Seems like a disconnect there.

I can't really say anything about your playback comments, however, to delete proxies go to the place where the clips are stored, find the .proxy files for each clip and delete them.
