  • No sound from MTS files

    Edius X Version 10.21.8061
    Windows 10.0.19044

I record files using Canon C100 and it produces MTS files (AVCHD with AC3 sound). This has worked for over approx 10 years, using Edius to edit.

I have encountered a problem that has never happened before. Last Thu (25/11/2021) I lost all sound from MTS files.
    • The file is imported but does not play sound on either the preview bin or timeline.
    • When refreshing the waveform, it think a few seconds then produces no visual.
    • No error messages come up in Edius.
    • The spectrum visualiser remains flat on the status view.
    • MP4 files continue to work fine, as they should.
    • This has affected files retrospectively across everything I have ever filmed in MTS format.
    • I have a working version of Edius 9 on my computer and this produced the same results, previously working fine.
    • I can play the files fine on my desktop using Windows Media Player, VLC etc. They all play the sound.
    Please can anyone help!

Do you have a short sample file which we can use for testing?

You need to use WeTransfer or similar and then post the link.

I would also like to add I have tried refreshing my Realtek onboard sound drivers. I have an MSI X470 Gaming Motherboard and I have tried:
          • Re-installing the original Realtek sound drivers on the original CD. No luck.
          • Updated to the latest driver from the manufacturer website - Realtek (R) Audio driver v6.0.9250.1. No luck.

Well the audio is there for sure.
Does ANY audio clip work on your system - ie wav on TL.
Did you reboot after updating drivers?
Have you got a ghosted C Drive to test on?

The audio plays fine in EDIUS 9 and EDIUS x.

Do you have any other out hardware for EDIUS? Maybe the wrong output is selected. But strange that you hear other audio out of EDIUS.

Why would there be no waveform?

Works here as well. I also have a waveform. The clip appears to be recorded at a low level. I applied a -12db normalization to the
                  audio. That got the waveform.

Do you have an IO card installed and selected as your Preview Device?
To check the audio device, left click your speaker icon in the taskbar and then click the drop down arrow in the upper right corner.
Match the source with the output device.

Thank you for getting back to me. I have done a small screen-record of what happens and also of me checking the output. You can clearly hear and see that I have the right output selected as I can hear the other example MP4 file working fine.

There is no other output hardware for Edius or any recent hardware changes to the PC.

Can I ask if you have the same up-to-date Windows Service Stacks that I highlight in the video, dated 23/11/2021? 10.0.19041.1371?
I believe this ties in with when it went wrong.

Yes all other files work fine. WAV, MP3, MP4. Only lose sound from MTS files with AC3, since last week - no hardware changes.

Did you reboot after updating drivers?
                      Yes, absolutely.

Have you got a ghosted C Drive to test on?
I don't know how to do that.

Can you normalize the clip to _12 dB a d check if you hear the sound ?

Also can you have the audio mixer open to see if you have a signal?

I do appreciate your line of enquiry but I do know the difference between quiet audio and no audio. Here is me normalising to _12db.

Also I know the clip is slightly on the low side, but the volume is really not that different to the other test MP4 clip (outside of Edius), as the clip demonstrates.

Edius is not decoding the sound from these files anymore.
