  • Yes, One Can Export Alpha from Edius!

I wanted to post this information about Alpha export as I was recently told by support and it is commonly accepted that Edius does not export an alpha channel.

Well thanks to Bluetungue (Barry) there is a way to export an AVI with an alpha channel.

    Here is the info:

EDIUS does export in Transparent Alpha but the process is hidden
Go to Help and type Alpha in the Index and select "Alpha Channel"
    But here is a description
Save both the clip and the Greyscale black and white matt in CanopusHQ
Both will appear in the bin
    Select Both
    Right click and select convert
    select Alpha Matt
In the Fill Key select the non Black and white file (Fill)
Select either Luminance Matt or Luminance Matt (Invert)
a depiction of the output will be shown in the window
Change or type in the file name and select the format to save in and you have a clip with transparent Alpha.
    ALL from Edius
    Regards Barry

So now my green screen footage can be exported straight to my clients instead of a trip through After Effects.

Just thought others should know about this...

It's unfortunate that Canopus support gave you incorrect information, since this is a feature that is mentioned both in the help file and the reference manual.

Well, support is correct in a manner of thought. EDIUS can't export (Export to File) an alpha channel.

But it can generate a file from clips, through the Convert|Alphamatte as stated.

Just found it in the help file.

I did not look for it because it seemed to solid that there was no way to get alpha out of Edius.

I will check the help files more carefully in the future.

I would hope that this whole 'workaround' will be finally taken care of in the next version release. This is one feature that should have been in version 1 or at least 2.

Hmm.. So what are the steps to getting a Greyscale matt clip from a Chromakey Filter on a green background in Edius? I think I can work it out, but would rather check with somebody who has already done it! :-)

Unless something has changed the grey scale with a feather doesn't work very well at all.

Mike's talking about using a grayscale as a key (mixed results).

To get the grayscale from a key, check the Show Key box in the Chroma or Luma key settings - and leave it checked.
