When transferring from a VCR via the Storm Mobile it is dropping frames at an alarming rate (please see the attached). Over a 30-minute project, it is losing 35 seconds. I have played the tape straight into the monitor and there is no signal loss or any sign of frame dropout. The connection between the VCR and the Storm is by RCAs, they are the only connections available on the VCR. As this is the first time I have attached a video if you can't play it please let me know the setting to use and I will re-post it. I have tried other tapes and the result is the same.

The biggest issue with a VCR/VHS format is that the signal is actually unstable. A monitor/TV will accept the signal, but it not steady enough for a capture device. This is where a TBC, TBS or some other type of frame sync or frame store device comes in. These devices will stabalize (TBS) or correct by replacing (TBC and frame sync/store) the portions of an analogue signal that cause capture devices to have a problem.

If you don't have access to one of these devices, playing the vhs into a consumer stand alone dvd recorder and then capturing the resulting dvd can sometimes help, or even running the signal through an analogue to firewire box and capturing the firewire signal, or a dazzle analogue to USB box can sometimes work, since the consumer nature of these inputs behave like the monitor/tv and are much more forgiving to unstable analogue video.

Thanks for your reply. I have a Panasonic M50 full-size VHS camera that has never been used. I will give it a try but need to get a DC lead for it first. As soon as I have tried it I will get back to you hopefully with good news. What you have explained certainly makes good sense. I have used the Storm many times in the past but always from a camera. I just assumed that the signal from the VCR would be as stable as a camera.

I have an analog to HDMI converter (30 bucks on Amazon). I will try using it to go from a VHS deck to Storm Mobile HDMI input and report back.

I usually use the S-Video inputs to the Storm Mobile from the deck with no problems, but I will try this.

I suspect the HMDI input will correct the time base.

Update: Didn't work for me. Gray screen. Perhaps I have a defective converter, or it's just not compatible.
