  • right ieee 1394 capture card for edius 9

    Hi All,
I am trying to convert vhs to edius 9
I have my vhs player connected to my Panasonic mini dv video player with svhs in and audio in all works fine ...
I am looking for a ieee1394 firewire capture card that will work with edius9

I have tested it on a friends computer using a basic video editing software with a ieee1394 card with all the same connections and it works fine
can anyone recommend the right capture card i need to install so edius can recognize and capture?
    Cheers

Firewire (IEEE1394) will require an internal card. Have a look in your system to see if you have a free slot for the card first of all and determine the kind (PCIe or PCI). If you do, any card with a TI chipset will work, if you can find one, as they are getting scarce. Personally I have a SIIG card in my system and it works great. I'd recommend not choosing one that is FW800 though. Cameras and other video equipment used FW400 and I have heard of some devices refusing to work when connected to a FW800 port, even though they theoretically should work.

SIIG.com is a leading manufacturer of IT connectivity solutions, including Serial ATA and Ultra ATA Controllers, FireWire®, USB, and legacy I/O adapters.

      Thanks
      I need a PCIe card
I have seen some cards that are 100-400 and 800 speed compatible.Would they pose any problems?

You don't need a card. I capture from a Panasonic 7650 to a Dazzle that plugs into USB using their software. Then I load the captured file into Edius and edit from there. A card will give you no better quality than Dazzle. I used to capture with a card and firewire on earlier Edius programs and there is no difference in quality. It was the ADVC-100. You can order from Pinnacle direct or Amazon.

This is the card I use in my system with my Sony FX-1 HDV camera. Works perfectly.

There was only firewire 400 and firewire 800 chips. Some devices only operated at a 100 or 200 speed, but were designed to use the 400 chip, so you can ignore the 100 and 200 speed specifications. Firewire 400 uses a 6pin connector on the cards usually, and a 4 pin on smaller cameras (some cards had a 4 pin and "pro" cameras had a 6 pin), while firewire 800 uses a 9 pin connector. Whatever card you get, based on my experience, if it has an actual 6 pin connector the chip should be able to negotiate the required 400 speed properly.

Ron says he had luck with a VIA chipset card, and to be honest, I have used them with success also, but they historically have not been as reliable as the TI chipset cards. This recommendation is from my experience as a system intergrator/builder/reseller/dealer for about 15 years and about 12 or 13 years since then working in a video post production house and still supporting my clients from my days as an intergratoer/dealer. That SYBA card that Lew linked to looks like one I would recommend. It's a TI chipset and the price is right. The SIIG card I have is expensive to buy, but it was a freebee for me. If I had to buy one, the SYBA looks good.

In my second 4790K PC I have a StarTeck card which has the Ti chipset. Feed either PC from my Sony GV-DH700/1 for DV and HDV also from my VHS decks . The DHR 1000 also feeds for large cassettes. I have to say though I do not use EDIUS for capture as I have always used Vegas. Neither card has given me a problem so far. I bought these cards last year as I normally capture into my old 3770K system ( that had on board connection ) and I now use for mail etc.

Hello . windows 10 edius 10.30.8291 does not see the 1394 controller, the driver is installed 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy) . where to look about the problem? Thank you.

EDIUS 10 no longer supports firewire, use EDIUS 9 to capture and then edit in 10

I am unsure why firewire had to be destroyed as I use it often, and as such I fire up EDIUS 9

you could compare this to trying to buy a PC case that can hold burners, they are almost extinct, the makers assume that nobody burns any more

and possibly the same assumption is that nobody captures via firewire any more
