Windows Media Exporter

when I export timeline to windows media using ProCoder3 or ProCoder for Edius, the resulting wmv is sharp

when I export using the native Windows media Video Exporter using the same quality settings as in ProCoder, the resulting wmv is way soft, as if it was shot out of focus

anyone notice this?

Bring up the movie properties in WMP for both samples, and tell me what WMV version number is being reported?

From memory, the native WMV exporter in EDIUS is older than the much newer ones featured in ProCoder..

I did some tests. At first I thought it might be due to two different scaling algorithms (since you're knocking SD down to a smaller res).

So I tested fullframe content - looks like the slight blur has to do with how the two exporters handle the interlaced source. ProCoder takes in the interlaced data and converts it, 'warts and all'. The native EDIUS exporter appears to blur the field data together in the encoding process. No risk of aliased edges on the non-interlaced results, but ultimately yielding a soft blur on any finer edges.

As a test, make a progressive timeline, and create a title (or import your opening title into the project). What do you see?

if I switch the project to progressive and then export to wmv, the result is sharp but just a fraction less sharp than PC3

so I will stick to the PC3 export, which of course eliminates segment encoding :(
