  • Bt. 2020 Edius Time Lapse Workflow Problem??

When doing time lapse, my workflow has been to import the stills, create a sequence, then usually, convert it to HQX in the bin. I'm working with 16-bit Photoshop graded files. Up until now, I've been working at BT 709. I just discovered that when I import the 16 bit Photoshop stills into the bin- I've also tried it with 16-bit TIFF- even though my project settings are set to 2020, under properties, they will show as BT.709. So, I'm really not sure whether the files are being bitrate neutered on import, or what might be happening. The other HUGE workflow problem, is that if I select an image in the bin, I can go into properties and change the 709 color space to 2020, but besides not knowing if the origional bitrate was preserved in the first place, I'm not able to make this change on more then one image at a time. If I select several images in the bin and change the properties, the change will only be applied to the first one. And, when dealing with a 450 image time lapse, this is not a pleasant thought. Furthermore, since my usual workflow would be to put all the stills in sequence anyway while in the bin, I tried doing this first, going to properties on the sequence, and applying the color change there. Well, the properties for the sequence, will not allow any color changes to be made to it and shows 709 by default. Not good!! So, if I then do a bin conversion of the sequence to GV HQX, I can then change the color in properties to whatever I want on the interim coded sequence, but again, I have no idea if I have lost all the extra color data during the origional import. I realize that I won't be working with 16-bit, but 10 bit, but I sure don't want to be working with 16-bit down converted to 8-bit, and then upconverted to 10-bit.

Any thoughts on what is going on here?
Also I should add that working with these 16-bit TIFF, or Photoshop images, in Resolve is impossible. Resolve imports them as a corrupted sequence, while Edius does the sequencing just fine.

    UPDATE:
While I'd still very much like to know what might be happening in Edius, I tried the multi image import and sequencing of the 16-bit images in DaVinci Resolve. I haven't tried this since the failed attempts about a year, but Resolve has had a few updates to 16 since then. It now works fine and shows that the sequence is 16-bit. Hopefully, this issue can be resolved with Edius. I'm using Edius X.

If you want to change color space of multiple clips .
1 set the bin to detail view
    2 add color space
    3 select the clips
4 the use the selection arrow and choose the color space you need.

    change color space.png

If wil look at the import issue and report back.

HQX does not carry BT2020, just 709. If you want to use HQX, use HQX MXF.

Are you saying that you get HQX to carry BT2020 in image sequences?

          Hi Jerry,
I clearly misspoke, you are absolutely correct about HQX!

            Hi Barry,
what kind of footage is your original footage? Is it Raw, Log, HLG or Rec 709? I ask because 10 bit or 16 bit footage alone is not HDR. I use V-Log in my Workflow.

The GV QT version of HQX carries HDR BT2020 no problem.

The origionals are actually 14-bit uncompressed 43MP raw images from Sony A7RII cameras. I grade them in Capture One Pro and Photoshop. Capture One doesn't offer any setting options for bt.2020,. The only expanded color output option is Photopro, and I dont know much about it other then it has a wider color gamut than sRGB, and Adobe RGB. The graded files are saved in 16-bit Photoshop format rather then JPEG. I'm just starting to figure out what might be the best workflow for time lapse 10-bit HDR. However, the 14-bit raw images are amazing and virtually impossible to find highlights or shadows which can't be pushed or pulled to perfection. So, when I eventually start working in a 10-bit color space, I'll have to find what looks best. I'm probably going to be using a LG OLED for doing this, but haven't bought it yet. Waiting to see what happens at CES next week.
Kind of still no man's land out there me thinks, when it comes to working with this stuff.

You are starting HDR with a complex thing. I think a HDR colorgrading in Photopro without a waveformskop is impossible and if you grade in Photoshop you will get a SDR grading and loose all the color data. I do the grading in Edius up to 500 nits and only direct sunlight is up to 1000 nits.
You are right that you never should go below 10 bit, because then you will get colorbanding and the standard exportfile for HDR 10 TV is h265 10bit 4:2:0.

Photoshop actually has a setting buried in the Preferences menus for what it calls 30-bit:
                    Edit menu to: Preferences
                    Preferences to: Performance
Performance: Graphic Processor Settings, Advanced Settings.
In the advanced settings, it will show a tick box with an option to choose 30 Bit Display.

Of course, this requires a graphic card and display divice which will support it.

When you do the grading in Photoshop and Edius then have to do it twice. The first grading in Photoshop does not make sense in this workflow.

I actually use a combination of Photoshop and Capture One Pro. I would love to be able to use only Edius or Resolve and pretty much bypass the still imaging software, but unfortunately, the NLEs won't accept import of the raw Sony camera images. So, they need to be passed through one of the other programs anyway. There are also some good color and masking tools. Photoshop has a really good sky replacement feature, and I use it regularly to change sky color in images with very complex foregrounds to a solid color which heavily contrasts with the foreground. It makes chroma key works in Resolve and Edius much easier.

OK, I think you can test that only. In my workfow I import the V-Log footage with PQ 10bit projectsettings. I grade with Magic Bullet Looks and apply the primary color correction PCC and have a look at the waveformskop to adjust the black (0 nits) and bright (500 nits). After the export as h265 I can view it on TV but the adjustment of the settings will be an other challenge ;-)

If wil look at the import issue and report back.
Just wanted to report back, that I tried this and, unfortunately, although that I am happy to say that Edius will actually recognize and import the raw Sony still files, in detail view, the pull down arrow you show in your screen capture does not appear at all. So, unfortunately, still in the same predicament of potentially having to change color setting on hundreds of images one at a time. I will point out that Resolve won't even recognize the Sony raw images, while Edius will. Have I missed something?
