Hi everyone
After the fiasco of the HDV to SD artifacts and the briliant solution from Mark Stuart from Aberdeen it set me going on my other holy grail, conversion from SD to HDV as I have too many to count SD tapes, most of which cannot be easily if ever reproduced, so
The quest started and this is the result and it is good
VirtualDub
Add resize filter
Settings in this order
Aspect Ratio "Disabled"
New Size "1440 x 1080"
Filter Mode "Lanczos3"
Interlaced "Selected"
Framing Options "Do not letterbox or crop"
Codec Friendly "Do not adjust"
click OK
Select Cropping
SET Y1 and Y2 to "70" sets 16x9
Select "Chroma Filter" Have not found any differenc in any of te settings but it give a nice warm feeling
set to "4:2:0"
Select "Video" from the menu
Select "Compression" and then CanopusHQ
Click OK and the select "File <> Save as AVI"
Select the location and file name and it is pretty good
Remember when bringing into Edius to select Properties and make sure "Bottom Field first " is selected for the file or it will be jittery
What has had me chasing this is that a number of local programs on commercial TV in Adelaide, "Out of the Blue" is one of them I am told is filmed on a Canon XL2 in SD and it is almost impossible to tell the difference with HD
One of the reasons seems to be the difficulty in editing HD and I was told there are hardware units that will convert to HD
Recently Digital Juicer had a half price sale RED GIANT Instant HD, BUT it is a plug in for Premier and FCP only and not Edius so I just thought seeing VirtualDub and VFAPI had been so successful in downconverting why wount it do an upconvert.
I had tried this in Edius but was not impressed, but the results in VD are extremely encouraging
The site for VirtualDub is here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VirtualDub.htm
Hope it helps some of you as well
Regards Barry
