  • Audio -20 decibel because?

Hi, I have an amateur question, I see that when I set up a new project I am asked to set the audio at -20 -18 -12 decibels, see attachment, I wonder why - 20?
Not too low? wouldn't it be better -2 decibels for example?
Can anyone explain to me why we use these parameters with audio?
    Thanks.

-20 is the ref level if you use the normalize tool and you want -20 say for broadcast TV

I have mine set to -12

    -2 is too hot

You never want to get to 0 db in the digital audio world. -2 would leave no margin for error. Think of your reference # as you would RAW files for video. More room to adjust in Post.

-12 is a good starting point. When preparing audio like documentaries for broadcast on television I normally keep all voices between -12 and -6 with -9 as reference for normal talking voice strength except if asked for something else.
