If I was buying a camera today I may be tempted to look at the SONY cameras that record to TAPE and SD card at the same time so you get the safety of Tape and the ability to drag and drop the video from the SD card.

The best of both worlds - IF the HDV format is what you want though..

    HDD - very fragile. Bad.

DV Tape - very rugged ... but, if used in extremely cold environments (-20 deg C or lower) - the tape transport has problems ... I have encountered twice - the tape capstan freezes around the tape and wound it like a solid little ball ... needless to say, the entire tape had to be physically cut out and pulled out from the transport.

Solid State - P2 Card, SxS, CF, SD, etc - are the best. I have personally used P2 cards in my HVX202 down to -36 deg C in the Himalaya without any problems. Right now, it is the archival of P2 data that is problematic today. Have to use external HDDs, computer grade tapes (LTO, Quantum, etc) - the tape transport is expensive.

Recently a colleague accidently bumped his JVC on the car door as he was getting in and that was the end of that.
He told me it was almost cheaper to buy a new camera

I agree, tape is still a great way to store content. Solid state is the future, but right now tape seems to be the cheapest way to store footage.

Right now I feel Tape is more accurate (time Code) way to get video into a computer. The Memory-card based camcorders are really the future though.

Plus with tape you have a CHEAP backup that you can store away for a later day. Hard Drive camcorders still scare me... if anything goes wrong all your footage for the day is gone.
