  • Windows 10 "Feature Update" - Now Can't Open Project files

    Hello,

Made the mistake of doing a Windows Update that was auto-downloaded. It is called a Feature Update version 2004. Anyway, now I get an access denied error 0x80070005 in an Edius dialogue when trying to open existing projects in Edius 9. All projects are listed as offline. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Can you display the project file's properties by right-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer? Who has read and write access to the file when you go to the Security tab?

By the way, Windows 10 20H2 is the current feature release -- 2004 was the previous one.

Before doing anything update windows several times and do a complete shutdown between each. It needs the complete shutdown to complete the update from my experience. Even then I do a %temp% and clean all temp files then do an update again. For my PC's it took 4 or 5 updates to get it completed with shutdowns every time. I went through none of the PC's seeing anything on the network to some seeing some things etc. They are all now on 20H2 and everything is stable but since each seemed to update over a 4 week period to get them all updated it was not very good for a while!! Two of the PC's run Malwarebytes Premium and that also caused a problem till it was updated. Editing PC's only have Defender and it of course gave no problems.

Thanks Guys. I did have file access permissions but something must have been altered with my user account. When I opened my %temp% folder I needed to tell it I had admin privileges. I ran Windows Update a few times and shutdown and all is working again. 20H2 has not shown up yet (not that I care about it anyway)...

Good to see you have it solved. I think it does a lot of preparation before presenting WIn20H2. When that was in the list it did the update with no problems on my PC's. It was all the updates before that caused the problems. Yes I too had the permissions box appearing several times before the updates were competed.

20H2 is a small update and does not even create a windows.old folder in the C drive

but the 2004 update creates a windows.old folder and you should remove it the correct way by using the disk cleanup utilty and by selecting system files, then select the "previous windows installation" for removal

I have Storage Sense ON and that too allows selection of files that can be removed. Covers Windows Update cleanup and delivery optimized files. I have it set for 14 days so at least can recover if things are not going well. I also manually check every so often too.
